Lissa's beginning to rethink this.

Posted: 12:20 am, Wednesday, July 31st

Parker Lewis Can't Lose came out on DVD yesterday! And the new Wilco released yesterday! And Public Enemies - which I've heard absolutely nothing about, except this one lackluster review- comes out today! And I have to write a paper! Apparently Bjork put out a live CD, too. She guest-DJed All Songs the other day, and it was the weirdest thing I've ever heard. She opened her set with something by a Syrian wedding singer or something.

Hat tip to DFFD's shit-ass team; that was as brutal a Sox loss as I can remember in the past five or so years.

Alright, now for something I'm pretty excited about - CK requested this about a month ago or so, and it took me a while to find an app and get everything together, but here it is - the Music Pete Hates playlist!

I'm a little hamstrung by some stuff - I can't really post anything that's iTunes DRM-ed, but thankfully that only resulted in one song being pulled from the list. Might affect the next list more, we'll see. And, oh yes, there will be more. Here are the liner notes, written by Pete himself (it was a little weird, writing about hating some of these songs, since I actually like some of them):

Music Pete Hates and Why

Clap Your Hands! - Of all Ron and Jen's hipster crap, this is the hipster crappiest.

Chun Li's Spinning Bird Kick– This song doesn't even reference Street Fighter! It's an instrumental, and captures none of the thighrifficness of Chun Li. Fail.

White Winter Hymnal – just on principal, because it was the best song of the year as voted on by assmunches who listen to All Songs Considered. Namely, Ron and Jen.

Skinny Love – And I told you to be gentle? Why would you want a girl to be gentle? God, sack up, man. And what's with retreating to some cabin in the middle of the woods in Wisconsin 'cause you got dumped? Get back out in the field, man! Girls love thinking they can help mend your busted heart. Hell, I tell girls I just broke up with a longtime girlfriend all the time. Know how many long-term girlfriends I've had? Well, there was this one, and we just broke up, and I'm kind of in a weird place right now...

The Crane Wife 3 – SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP. If I ever met Colin Melloy, I'd beat him to death with a bar stool. Seriously, I'd go Jackie Chan on his ass, whatever random object was laying nearby, I would turn into a deadly weapon of rage. Fucking hell.

Chicago – Oh, God. I actually did go to Williamsburg to punch the trucker hat off a hipster after this album came out. Unfortunately, I drank too much PBR and passed out, instead.

The Way You Say Goodnight – Fucking Magnetic Fields. 69 Love Songs, and not one about 69-ing? Fail.

C is the Heavenly Option – I would trade away that one night with Jenny Filkins for the opportunity to punch every member of this band in the genitals. And she was a fuh-rrrreak, too.

Autoclave – Who the fuck are the Mountain Goats?

Stay Postitive – You've written four albums about kids OD-ing and being on the run from the feds, and you have the nerve to write a song called 'stay positive'? It also does not help that you can't sing. Or that Ron likes you.

Hole in One – Why is this kid so Goddamn angry and mopey? Yeah, it sucks to be from Omaha. Move.

My Art – God, I hate it when musicians call their music “their art.” Drink death. And when you've got a song called “My Art” on an album called “Feminist Sweepstakes”? Instant loathing.

Bumble Bee Tuna – For some reason, Ron thinks this song is clever.

Sweet Sweet – I was building up a strong hatred of Billy Corgan all through Siamese Dream, and then this thing hit. What the hell is this crap? Hated him ever since.

Not Big – Screw you, I AM TOO BIG. YOU'RE BIG, YOU CANKLE-Y BRIT!

Two Princes – Lord.

Only Wanna Be With You – All right-minded people in the world hate this song.

All I Wanna Do – Remember when this was a big hit? It's like VH1 needed some lame-ass shit to combat the awesomeness of Superunknown over on AlterNation on MTV. If I had more time and less beer, I'd start working on a thesis involving songs where the singer talks about all they want to do, related to sucktitude. Take the Stones' Can't Always Get What You Want. Doesn't matter what you want. You can't get it. Good song.

Son of a- It only gives 30 second samples? Dammit. Now I need to find a different player. My bad, gang.

Miyaa -- Wednesday, July 1 2009, 08:12 am

One of the best, yet weirdest, songs I've ever heard.

At least he didn't try to rick-roll her.

Secretary -- Wednesday, July 1 2009, 08:38 am

That song has always made me wonder what "havering" meant. Your strip inspired me to look it up today. I have to say - it still doesn't make sense to me: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/haver

Joe B -- Wednesday, July 1 2009, 08:43 am

We mentioned the abandoned Atlantic Avenue Tunnel at some point. I just found out Bob Diamond is giving a tour of it on Sunday July 19. See this page http://www.brooklynrail.net/bhra_events.html for the phone number to call to reserve a place. It's 15 bucks. One of the most amazing forgotten places in NYC, in my humble o. I'm going.

Zero -- Wednesday, July 1 2009, 08:59 am

Now I can't get that song out of my head. Thank you for the earworm!

I think if I got to bed with a 10-1 lead I should wake up to a W. Just sayin'. But now that Bruney was terrible again does that start up the Joba to the pen uproar again?

I actually like that they're 30-second clips. Otherwise the playlist might be a bit too daunting for someone who only recognizes three of the songs on the list (the last three).

ktbb -- Wednesday, July 1 2009, 09:48 am

It might be a bit much, but a Steampunk-themed Atlantic Avenue Tunnel tour (participants too), would be very very apt. And cool. (for a bit)

Bullfrog -- Wednesday, July 1 2009, 10:40 am

This is pretty interesting about that kidnapped Times reporter from a few weeks back.

CK -- Wednesday, July 1 2009, 11:00 am

Pete's liner notes made me laugh out loud, Bullfrog. Thanks. And Joe B., I'm definitely going to look into the tunnel tour -- thanks for the news!

Appreciate the nod to the greatest comeback in O's history and the greatest comeback ever by a last place team against a first place team! It was a thing of beauty. It was that much more perfect that Anusface came in just to give up the game winner.

Coach -- Wednesday, July 1 2009, 01:50 pm

I also appreciate the O's comeback as the Yanks deficit is only 2.5 games now. If the Yanks didn't shit the bed whenever they faced Boston this year, this could be a totally different pennant race.

Although if my aunt had balls, she would be my uncle...

DFFD -- Wednesday, July 1 2009, 02:45 pm

There's something so enjoyable about watching Josh Beckett get shelled.

Bullfrog -- Wednesday, July 1 2009, 03:15 pm

This is a baffling trip to Baltimore. Oh well.

DFFD -- Wednesday, July 1 2009, 03:18 pm

I'm just glad you didn't call it "Fenway South" like one of the typical bandwagon douchebag fans.

Bullfrog -- Wednesday, July 1 2009, 03:26 pm

I don't miss you.

Bullfrog -- Wednesday, July 1 2009, 03:26 pm

You have a real persecution complex when it comes to the O's, by the way.

DFFD -- Wednesday, July 1 2009, 03:32 pm

haha possibly

And don't lie you miss my sunny disposition regularly.

DFFD -- Thursday, July 2 2009, 12:31 pm

No shots at me for prematurely talking about Beckett getting shelled???

Bullfrog -- Thursday, July 2 2009, 04:07 pm

You're an Orioles fan - you have enough problems without me getting on you.

Bullfrog -- Thursday, July 2 2009, 04:26 pm

Man, check out the game charts of the last two games of the O's-Sox series.

This map of New York City homicides is awesome!

Pat S. -- Thursday, July 2 2009, 05:41 pm

Re: homicides map comment: I agree it is a really useful feature, although your juxtaposition of "homicides" and "is awesome!" kind of scares me, yo.

Bullfrog -- Thursday, July 2 2009, 06:37 pm

Yeah, I thought about that after I said it. The map is incredibly detailed and interesting; murder is not cool.
