Comic for Friday, Nov 5, 2004

Posted: 5:00 pm, Thursday, November 4, 2004

Everyone holding up OK? I've been in meetings all day, and am taking tomorrow off, so you're getting a kind of weird update today. I'm posting this right before I take off from the office today, so the comic for Friday is being posted a day ahead. I don't know if anyone out there follows an evening web-surfing routine, but if you usually read the strip after five o'clock, make sure to back the truck up a day, because I posted a whole lot of ranting and shit on the page that's actually dedicated to Thursday the fourth. I'd say that I'll try not to do this too much, but since I can't post updates from home and since I've got a lot of vacation time to use up between now and the end of the year, this may start happening with some regularity. I'll try and make note of it when it does happen, though.

So, since I've been in meetings and since I've used my one big huge political rant concerning the election, I'm just going to make some random observations and stuff with this post. There may be links, there may not be - I may just talk for a bit.

Have you ever been eating a bag of baby carrots, eating, eating, eating, and they're good, and then you get one that's just a bit sour or something, and it goes and ruins the entire experience of eating the baby carrots on you? Conversely (well, maybe not, but on the other hand), have you ever been eating baby carrots and they're so good you can't stop, and then you've got a horrible stomachache the rest of the day? I ate a whole pound of baby carrots once last May and then met up with Jan to see Bright Eyes, and I could barely enjoy the show because of my stomach. Also, because of drunken emo fratboys (if such a thing exists) yelling at Conor the whole time. Which seems to be endemic at Bright Eyes shows, which is surprising.

As you all know, the clocks changed last Sunday, and now it is always dark when we get out of work. For many of you - 2.0, Crownover, Di if she reads this which I don't think she does - it is almost always dark when you get out of the office, anyway. For me, this is new, and, frankly, exciting. My mother told me over the weekend that I've always been excited when it gets dark early, even when I was a little kid. I have no idea what's up with that. But for some reason, I really like shorter days. Especially now, because when it's dark when I'm getting out of the office, I can see the garish lights of Times Square off in the distance. Don't get me wrong, I loathe Times Square - I loathe crowds, advertising, the garishness - but sometimes it's pretty cool to see in the dark night. Also, Saturday is the four-year anniversary of my starting work here at the office. Which is shocking, a) that I've been out of collitch that long, b) that I've been working at one place for that long and c) that I haven't been fired, but since it was dark out that first day of getting off work and it's dark out now, it kind of gives me a nice feeling of nostalgia.

Isn't it funny how I'm calm and contemplative today? I think something has broken in my head. I'll let someone else be angry today. The boys at Penny-Arcade would like you to use proper grammar, please and thank you. Mr. Period cracks me up.

Oh, I sent this to a few of you, but I thought this was funny - from Donovan and Crownover both:

Good stuff.

Let's see, the Irish are 'dogs by seven this week at Tennessee. I'd take Tennessee and the points, the Irish are in a state of utter disarray. Eight years ago, when Lou left, I was appalled at the idea of Steve Spurrier coaching the team. Now? Meh, nothing else we're doing has worked so far. Still, go Irish, beat Vols!

Took me a walk on lunch, took some pictures with ye olde camera, whilst listening to Rage Against the Machine's first album (I only sound calm, trust me)... I'll crop some of that stuff up and hopefully have a few installments of the Museum ready to go for the next few weeks. I know I've said it a few times, but October was really a non-month for me. Sorry if the site suffered at all, but I'm working on it.

So! Everyone, have a good weekend. If you're trying to get a hold of me tomorrow, it won't work. I'll be back on Monday, well-rested and ready to bring the funny. Or whatever it is I do here.
