Five wide, empty backfield.

Posted: 7:40 am, Thursday, October 27, 2005

Not a lot going on around the web today - basically, eagerly anticipating Fitzmas - so the links are going to be pretty scarce. I think I had an anecdote I wanted to share, but I can't think of it at the moment. (sound back there)

Just when I thought there was nothing further George Lucas could do to enrage me, I find this. (sound) I thought it was humorous for about ten seconds, then I went blind with fury. For some reason, the twerping up of Yoda really bothers me. Use Chewie or something in this skit, and I'm fine. I just - I mean, Yoda's a freaking Jedi Master. He should get to carry himself with a bit more dignity than this. By the way, I have no idea how that site hasn't been sued off the face of the earth yet. Must be an approved-of leak or something.

Random amusing thing I found reading collitch football blogs yesterday!

Speaking of collitch, Alumni Hall will stand for all time. I find it interesting that Morrissey is on the protected list but not the endangered list. Looking at the save-it-if-we-can list, it seems that the north side of South Quad is potentially in the way of the wrecking ball at some point in the future - save, of course, the new multicultural center and the K of C building. I note with some glee that Zahm is not on any sort of protected list. I also could not find the url for the "destroy immediately list" which, probably, begins with Fisher and ends with the CCMB.

And, finally, because I like spamusement and am irritated by Sex and the City, this.

I just remembered the anecdote I was going to share, but I'm running late, so you'll get it tomorrow. I hope you can somehow sleep through the suspense. Oh, congrats to the White Sox - I see that they won last night. Man, how bad must it suck to be a Cubs fan right now? Also: Screw you, Texas.

Oh for the love of God. When that random dude did that Yoda puppet thing to the tune of...I think it was Bohemian Rhapsody...you thought it was funny, and you totally linked to it on this site. It's not that it's Yoda that makes this bother you, it's that George Lucas has pissed you off and now you can't accept anything he has done since that day. Yoda is not a Jedi master...there ARE NO JEDI MASTERS. Yoda is a puppet. When he's not in a movie he's in a prop closet somewhere in Southern California.

There. I've said it.

Also, SKT introduced me to a magazine called The Week and I am quickly becoming a fan. If you get a chance to pick up a copy, give it a try. It does a nice job of summarizing the news of the previous week.

MNP -- Thursday, October 27 2005, 09:06 am

Miers is out! Wait, is this good or bad? Is he just going to come up with someone worse?

SKT -- Thursday, October 27 2005, 09:09 am

Sly - so glad you like and also a legal-ish question: Is getting yelled at by toll collectors for using pennies akin to shop owners stipulating a minimum credit card amount?

E -- Thursday, October 27 2005, 09:15 am

Last I checked, pennies are still considered legal tender.

For those of you who have yet to hear my rant: little shops CANNOT require a minimum purchase amount to use a credit card. It is based on contract law - they have a contract with you, the customer, that your credit card will be accepted at their vendors. They have a second contract with the vendor that the vendor will accept the credit card. There was an article in the Wall Street Journal about this in the summer of 2002. If you want to make a big deal about this, you are supposed to call the credit card company while you are standing in line and have the store manager speak with the operator. Good luck.

The Week - brought to you by the publishers of Maxim!

I'm unsure about how to feel over Miers, too, MNP. But if those indictments come down today and they actually can stick one on Cheney, look for Not-my-pres to choke on another pretzel/pass out drunk again tonight.

SKT -- Thursday, October 27 2005, 09:16 am

That's what I think too! I know that pennies are obnoxious in that there are time consuming to count out, but I thought it was hilarious that the toll collector tried to tell me that he "wasn't allowed to accept pennies."

Here I thought I was so on top of things because this was posted on the Observer just 1 minute ago....apparently my newspaper isn't the quickest! http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/news/br eaking_news/13010797.htm

SKT -- Thursday, October 27 2005, 09:21 am

he passed out?

Bullfrog -- Thursday, October 27 2005, 09:34 am

'Member back in 2001, shitwit passed out on a pretzel? The spin was because he's so incredibly fit that the pretzel somehow knocked him out. I'm not kidding - I'll have to find an article online about it. As it's thoroughly impossible to pass out eating a pretzel, most of the interweb decided he'd been drinking again. It was only a few months after 9/11, so it's kind of understandable. I'll find something in a few minutes.

In the meantime, the Onion has an awesome revised history of Notre Dame football. The last item is my favorite.

OK, here's one..

And here's some of the booze-theory, not even from the then-nascent blogosphere, but from an op-ed in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. (Not sure how it is as a paper for news, but it's got a good sports section.)

Two corrections: It was early 2002 when this happened, and while I mentioned it was understandable that he'd been drinking, by no means did I mean that's OK. I'm kind of of the opinion that recovering alcoholic presidents should probably stay away from the cold frosty ones.

indictments will not be announced today. This just in from Air America.

Damn.

Bullfrog -- Thursday, October 27 2005, 10:16 am

Man, and I had been saving that Fitzmas thing all week trying to predict the big day, too.

Bullfrog -- Thursday, October 27 2005, 10:29 am

The Times on the indictments, in case you want something to read.

MNP -- Thursday, October 27 2005, 12:09 pm

Good info on the indictments & the withdrawal from the post http://blogs.washingtonpost.com/thefix/

Bullfrog -- Thursday, October 27 2005, 01:24 pm

While we have to wait *another* 24 hours for the indictments to drop, the NY Daily News reports that Rove's mistress is leaving him. I don't know which of A) Rove is married? B) Rove has a mistress? C) Rove isn't gay? crossed my mind first - we'll have to go to instant replay for that. What we do know is that the Farkers are loving this one.

ouch, harsh words for the lone star state. have you really been all through texas? it's actually a pretty amazing state and people are very nice. a very laid back, no worries type attitude. you shouldn't associate the bush family with the whole state. austin is an amzing place, dallas is pretty cool, san antonio is nice, i've heard that the ballpark at arlington is one of the best in the majors. and that's just a few things. i drove thru texas 2 times, and it was very amazing landscape.

MJ -- Thursday, October 27 2005, 01:51 pm

I just dropped a creamer into my afternoon tea and thought of the movie Pi.

Dave, thanks for supporting Texas. I've only been in Austin two months and really am loving it for many of the reasons you mentioned. As for the Bush family, none of them are actually Texan, as a fair number of Texans would be happy to point out. And the people of Texas must have seen the error of their ways in electing GW governor because now Kinky Freidman, the cowboy poet, is running for the post and getting a surprising amount of press.

Bullfrog -- Thursday, October 27 2005, 02:55 pm

"Everywhere you look, there's math." I'm in hell!

I guess I have to admit that most of my hatred for Texas comes from the Bushes - who, yes, I know aren't from Texas - and the vast majority of Texans I met at collitch, who annoyed the crap out of me with their stupid state flag. I've heard good things about San Antonio and Austin and 2.0 would like to see Marfa someday. I'm sure I'll wind up going there eventually, as my buddy Bitter will likely get married at some point.

AD - glad to hear they're coming around on that one now that it's too freaking late. What about on DeLay?

bullfrog:

no worries, i hear you about the annoying people and such, but they come from every state. since we're both from upsate ny (i'm from troy), i've had my share of annoying people run-ins from there. but texans are a special kind of people. and again, it's where my wife and i got our bulldog from:

ad: texans, generally are warm and friendly, very welcoming. they can definately party down and laugh a lot. you'll certainly love austin, which is not like any other texas town, more like chicago, boston or san deigo (not a good description, i know).
