Comic for Wednesday, October 26th, 2005

I know that they're actually "Cliffs" Notes, but I don't think I've ever actually heard anyone refer to them as those. For my part, I only ever got the Cliff Notes to one book - Madame Bovary, our summer reading for AP English senior year and still one of my least favorite books. All I can really recall about it was that promissary notes were mentioned often, and I kept thinking of the mean red bills from the LIFE board game whenever they were. I hated those things. I played this game of life once against.. I can't remember whom, but I wound up completely and inexorably in debt. It was the worst game of LIFE anyone's ever played. I hit, like, every single negative spot on the board. It was terrible.
Kind of a cool little article about collitch rivalry t-shirts. The Cal v. UCLA one they describe is funny because it's so wordy, and they leave out Catholics v. Convicts. Also, "Rudy Sucked but He'd Start at Boston College." I love that one. The boom goes the dynamite thing that they link to is the most awful student sportscast I've ever seen - positively freaking brutal. (sound)
Lost is a rerun tonight, but just so you're not completely in the dark as to the goings-on on the island, Merry is going to propose to Kate. The other little bit of celebrity gossip I have is only pseudo-gossip - it's this dude calling on gay/lesbian celebs to actually say that they're gay/lesbian because there's nothing to lose and the world to gain. He specifically mentions Jodi Foster, who pretty much everyone knows is gay, and Anderson Cooper, who I didn't know was gay. I had, however, heard this weird comment he made about friends of his being destroyed by crystal meth, and was utterly confused by it. So now at least that makes more sense, which is nice. The other interesting thing in there is that some dude from Fox News is gay, which is funny only in that Red America's head would probably asplode if they knew they were receiving their two-minute hate from a gent who likes gents. By the way, I knew a kid back in my kayaking days who was named "Anders." This remains the weirdest name I've ever heard. By the way, I'm not entirely sure there's nothing to lose as long as there's crazy mofos like ol' Fred out there.
Another cool little article on Bill Watterson today.
The Times doesn't touch on the F-train at all in this article, but does a nice job of covering exactly how frustrating the subways can be on the weekend. Seriously, our train into Manhattan is almost never *not* screwed up on the weekends. I'm mostly posting this article as proof to Di and Crownover that I'm not necessarily being super-lame when I decide to stay in Brooklyn on the weekends. It really *is* a horrible pain in the ass to get into Manhattan sometimes. Hell, Crownover had a tough time getting 43 blocks straight uptown a few weekends ago, so I probably don't need to explain anything to her.
Also from the Times, a little review of the Colbert Report. As I've mentioned plenty of times, no tengo la cable, but I saw some of the part about the Avian flu thanks to Crooks and Liars (friggin' fantastic website). Highly recommended, if it can keep that pace up.
And, finally, I found this Lost Levels site about abandoned NES projects as part of 1up's NES at 20 coverage. Pretty sweet.
Back with more tomorrow, gang.
