Comic for Friday, October 21st, 2005

A growing boy needs his rage.

Posted: 7:40 am, Friday, October 21, 2005

You know what you need to start your Friday off right with? A nice laugh. Don't know what it says about me that I tell you to start your day off with a laugh after you've presumably already read my comic - I guess that I assume no one's laughing at that strip. Which I just found the flaw in. And it's big. Damn. Be right back.

Miss me? Sorry, in switching the camera angle in the last panel, I totally forgot to make Lissa with her back to us. A-duh, Bullfrog. Anyway, make sure you go to that link. It's crazy.

Also crazy: Doomsday Christians. While I do agree that evidence seems to be pointing us in the direction that the end of the world is nigh, it is clearly because of stuff brought around by us and not the Book of Revelations. I'm talking your basic war, man-made famine, global warming, stuff like that. Doomsday Chrisitans think it's the rapture. In case of rapture, you can spot these people by their empty cars. What is it with those bumper stickers? Why do they assume they'll be driving when the rapture hits? I pass a car with that bumper sticker a lot when I'm going to go move my car. It's always been empty, does that mean the rapture's already happened? Or that they're in their house? Can they even tell the difference? By the way, the argument for Intelligent Design is not going well in Pennsylvania, so at least they're safe from one type of zombie.

Whether you're being overrun by Doomsday Christians or brain-eating zombies, I think we can all agree on one thing - you're going to need a drink in that instance. The Morning News checks in with good cheap wines to try.

FEMA fallout - the investigation's already turned up an e-mail conversation in which the one guy trying to get help to teh Superdome was told Brownie needed time to eat dinner first. Goodness, that's not a good start for Not-my-president and his roving happy-funtime band. Neither, of course, is this.

I haven't read it yet, but Something Awful did a Fashion SWAT of Halloween outfits yesterday. I had a great idea what to go as for Halloween and completely forgot it, which is aggravating me to no end. What's everyone going as? I'm to the point where I'll just steal ideas.

By the way, I hope none of my addle-minded strips have ever caused this level of discussion.

The Irish need to win out for a shot at the BCS - we'll get things started at home against BYU tomorrow.

Irish 56, BYU 17.

Go Irish, beat Cougars!

did the lights go out in panel #2? did the gang get jetted to an alternate universe? is this just their shadows on the wall?

MNP -- Friday, October 21 2005, 09:00 am

How egotistical can you get? grr. Yankees fans still think their team is the shit even when they lose.

Bullfrog -- Friday, October 21 2005, 09:30 am

Geez, MNP, that wasn't even bad out of these people.

Grafe, it's just, you know, a silhouette. I did it once before..

http://www.fivebuckstofriday.com/archive/archi ve022505.html

Maybe I should've gone with the white silhouettes again? Basically, I wanted to break up the visuals a bit. I was really tired when I was doing this last night, so it didn't get my fullest attention.

Grafe -- Friday, October 21 2005, 09:38 am

oh, i thought it was a glitch the first time.

Bullfrog -- Friday, October 21 2005, 10:05 am

Dammit, the same day I link to a thread about people not understanding Hi and Lois, too, Grafe. Ah well, keeps me humble.

Grafe -- Friday, October 21 2005, 10:43 am

you can always count on me not to understand something simple.

do most comic strips go all shadowland or is it just a 5$ thing?

#15 -- Friday, October 21 2005, 11:04 am

Ooh, thanks for the wine recs. After all the alcohol I had to consume this past week (drowning sorrows and all that), I should really stay away for awhile, though... 2005 was actually a fantastic time to be a Cards fan, so I've decided not to die of grief and despair just yet.

And the ex-Yankee factor in the World Series is a huge subject of conversation here. The yankees fans are kinda pissed off about it, actually. Heh heh. Schadenfreude...

Bullfrog -- Friday, October 21 2005, 11:07 am

I think I swiped it from Doonesbury - he did it a lot in the late 80s early 90s. Calvin and Hobbes did it from time to time, too. Comic books do it.. Just a way to keep the eye engaged.

Of course, it's generally better suited for black and white strips.

At any rate, I don't think we have to worry about seeing it again any time soon. Thinking about the next few weeks, I don't see why it would come into play. Unless I decide to just start doing that to annoy you.

Bullfrog -- Friday, October 21 2005, 11:32 am

Also, #15, Slate has an ongoing look into cheap wines that I know I linked to once around Eastertime. Can't find it right now, but search for wine on Slate and you get a bunch. Here's one on good merlots that became cheap after Sideways.

Reggie Ho -- Friday, October 21 2005, 02:40 pm

As the greatest field goal kicker in ND history, I must disagree with everyone on the excitement of the upcoming World Series. While I agree that neither team is actually enjoyable to watch, no one really cares about the White Sox, and certain people just despise Roger Clemens (even though he's one of the greatest pitchers we'll see in our lifetime), it is compelling drama that one of these teams will necessarily need to win a World Series. Let's be honest, neither of these teams will be back in the Series for another 40+ years, so it's an interesting match-up because a historical loser is bound to win it this year. With that said, I don't think I'll watch the games played in Chicago because there is no such thing as a White Sox fan...so, who the hell are all those people present cheering on the South Side Losers? Anyway, ND by 14 field goals over BYU this weekend.

Bullfrog -- Friday, October 21 2005, 03:11 pm

Being less optimistic than Reggie, I stand by my prediction of Notre Dame by a mere 13 field goals. You thought the time of possession was something else last week? You ain't seen nothing yet.

Who won the All-star game, the AL? I guess I stand a better chance of watching the games in Chicago because the ones in Houston will be on opposite the Gilmore Girls and Lost. Oh, but Lost is a rerun... Will Pinella be in the booth the whole time? I may listen for when he inevitably explodes at McCarver.

MoveOn.org, ... has been "selling T-shirts with Mr. DeLay's mug shot on it."

http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/10/21/delay.c ourt.ap/index.html

Where does one get such a T-shirt?

PS: My uncle in Chicago has been a true White Sox fan since the first brewing of Old Style. Actually, a lot of the suburban folks are - they don't like those trendy Lincoln Park-ers and their love of the city's largest bar, er... stadium.

Bullfrog -- Friday, October 21 2005, 03:29 pm

Didn't see 'em at MoveOn, but:

Reggie Ho -- Friday, October 21 2005, 03:45 pm

First of all, Cafe Press makes about the shittiest quality shirts. Althought they are often funny, they wouldn't usually qualify as a suitable dust rag.

Second, Pinella SUCKS in the booth. He's smart about baseball but has no TV/on air personality. Brenly on the other hand in the NL games was awesome. He has a certain career in broadcasting. Hopefully he'll be in the booth for games 3 and 4.

Bullfrog -- Friday, October 21 2005, 03:52 pm

Shit, you're right - I forgot, Brenley was the one I liked. Actually, I don't mind Leiter, either. Pinella, I didn't know it was him until they cut to him. I thought it was Keith Hernandez with a cold or something.

CafePress does make crappy shirts, by the way.

I was thinking stocking stuffers for my relatives in Sugarland, TX (his district).

encore?

MJ -- Sunday, October 23 2005, 10:41 pm

Yeah - I'm not sure why that showed up twice. Not only twice, but 20 minutes apart. Weird. I blame Richard.
