I don't know why Jen is so taken aback by the idea of talking.

Again, I have no idea. I've looked at the script for Friday's strip, it makes more sense. Part of the problem with a slice-of-life strip is that I never get to explore genres that make my heart sing, like fantasy, sci-fi, or steampunk. Of course, I don't know what I have to add to steampunk. You've got a bunch of gears, some little steampipes, and everyone carries a right proper brolly. I dunno, what's there to add? Maybe someday, when I've made my millions teaching and I have all the time in the world to dedicate to the strip, I can do like the ALF cartoon in the 80s and have Five Bucks Tales, where I just plunk the characters in different genres or stories. (Thank Christ I've never done the Wizard of Oz thing with the strip, huh?) I dunno, so there we go with that.

Something on the internet has been written about the Hold Steady. As per my contractual obligation, I am linking to it.

There's a lot of downloadable content for the new wave of video games, but none for Wii Fit. I would totally pay two bucks for new dialogue from the trainers, because I've heard everything on this list a million times, and I don't even play the thing that much.

I read this delightful children's book, Dominic, for the class I'm taking at Brooklyn Collitch. I highly recommend it. It's got a beautiful scene where the dog ponders life and death. Great illustrations, too. I am in love with the book. William Steig is the author/illustrator.

The Daily News gave Star Trek five stars, for whatever the fuck that might mean to you. Has it really been almost ten years since my childhood was brutally murdered in front of me? Thankfully, I trust JJ Abrams more than George Lucas.

Good to see they're still playing the brutally retarded Cotton-Eye Joe clip at the Silo.

Oh, fuck, awesome:

"I've had some friends that are actually homosexual. And, I mean, they know where I stand, and they know that I wouldn't have them anywhere near my children."

Yay, hatred!

Wait - the kid from 3rd Rock from the Sun (and, more awesomely, Brick) is playing Cobra Commander? How does that compute?

I bought both the fifth Percy Jackson book and PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES yesterday. But the decision about which one to read first . . . my head asplode.

Where'd you get PJ? I tried the bookshops near BC, but no go. I was going to hit the Community Bookstore on my way home tonight. My kids are frothing at the mouth.

Lemme know about P&P&Z.

steig's sylvester and the magic pebble was a childhood favorite of mine; i really liked his parents, for some reason. thanks, i'll have to check out dominic.

I got it at McNally Robinson here in Soho.

Cobra Commander is kind of a skinny prick from what I remember. I recall everyone being up in arms when Tobey McGuire was cast as Spiderman but I thought it was brilliant as Peter Parker really is a nerd. Personally I am more worried about the illustrious Dennis Quaid destroying the film.

I am really hoping the new Star Trek movie is Wrath of Khan esque. By that I mostly mean that it is an actual good movie and not just good for Trek fans.

One year ago today, Ron was considering staying in California. http://www.fivebuckstofriday.com/2008/archive080506.html

What is it with these people and California? They're like Europeans 100 years ago dreaming of America. As far as I'm concerned California is a nice place to visit but...

Miyaa -- Wednesday, May 6 2009, 01:11 pm

Having traveled to California recently and considered trying to live there, it comes down to three things:

1. Pacific Ocean (Seriously, East Coasters, you can keep your Atlantic Ocean. Pacific is where it's at.) 2. West Coast Time Zone means being able to watch games in the morning and being done with the Red Sox - Yankees games at 6 pm PDT. (Yea for sleep! Alas, it doesn't work for the Oscars.) 3. Variety. You don't like LA, okay, live in the Lake Tahoe region. Don't like snow, fine, head down to San Diego. Don't like deserts? Head to Northern California. Like California, but hate the traffic and the inability for the California legislature to do anything right? Move up to Oregon or Washington.

Sorry, I forgot that the forum here is web dependent.

Also, I'm disappointed that Cobra Commander isn't wearing the shiny helmet for a face. We're not suppose to see his face at all! At least Destro has the silver head motif.

I thought your Cleveland inspiration came from here:

Ted's Head -- Wednesday, May 6 2009, 01:58 pm

So I made my first trip to the beloved Silo last night. Here's my pro-con list so far (I do not want to discuss the actual game nor my unexplainable man-crush for the enemy that is Jason Bay)-

Pro - Steak sandwich and nachos were delicious. Con - $15 for sandwich and $11 for nachos (those were split by 3 people though)

Pro - Stadium is nice and shiny and new. Con - A bit sterile if you ask me. I was actually expecting more.

Pro - People walking around with "Can I help you signs" were actually helpful. Con - Don't bother asking any of the regular concession people questions because they have no fucking idea where they are, let alone where the steak sandwich cart is.

Pro - I didn't see the Cotton-eyed Joe clip, but they did play a clip from Rudy, which made me happy. Con - They played a clip from Rudy, which made me also think of Bullfrog, probably gloating at the score.

Pro - Overall game watching experience was excellent. Great views from seats and wide, open concourses, huge hi-def video screen is amazing, and sound system is outstanding. Con - Still a little sterile and hard to find my way around inside stadium. Not enough signage and I felt like there weren't enough ramps/escalators. Maybe just have to get more used to it.

Random Pro - While I was there, I learned of a lot of "green" initiatives that went into the building of the stadium and its day to day operations, which I thought was kind of cool. Random Con - Ushers guard their sections like Fort Knox, constantly checking tickets so you can't sneak into a better area. I guess it's better to leave those good seats empty.

Overall, a good place to watch a baseball game but for some reason I can't quite put my finger on, I actually think I was expecting to be liking it more.

And I don't get the whole California thing. Been there. Not impressed.
