Great! Now I'm back at school! Fantastic!
So at what point did people figure out they weren't talking to each other on the phone?
I finally got to Coraline on Friday, the final bonus day off of my week. The matinee pricing has gone way up in the past year at the Pavilion, and when you tack on the bonus 3D cost, it was a ten-buck ducat. It was still worth it, though. I love stop-motion animation; it's like a security blanket for me or something. Anyway, I highly recommend Coraline, although 2.0 was more lukewarm on it. Here's an interview with the director from the AV Club. (He mentions that he worked on Pete's Dragon with Disney, calling it an in-between or something like that. I always thought Pete's Dragon was one of their weird-yet-beloved 60s films like Herbie the Lovebug, mostly because we had to play 'Candle on the Water' in fifth-grade band. I was shocked to find out it came out in 1977. This severely downgrades the film's standing in my eyes.)(Dear Lord, Herbie has an actor's page on IMDB.)(Of course I looked up KITT, how could you even ask?)
What an impossible picture of Anaheim in 1966.
2.0 was right. I should've done a running blog for the Oscars. Shit. Next year.

delkon -- Monday, February 23 2009, 06:39 am I figured it out when he said "I love you", that was way out of left field for this situation...
Wood -- Monday, February 23 2009, 07:24 am I was fooled by your ruse sir
RJF -- Monday, February 23 2009, 07:31 am Well, I'm depressed.
CK -- Monday, February 23 2009, 08:43 am Ditto what Wood and RJF said. Even after the pizza guy comment, I thought "Oh, so Ron is going to meet them at Mena's apartment because Jen is back at Lissa's place . . ."
This is very well done, and probably truthful to the way real people would behave in this situation, which is the most important thing. But I had been hoping for a big romantic moment for the two of them, I do confess.
MNP -- Monday, February 23 2009, 09:01 am Really, we're back to Mara???
Licia -- Monday, February 23 2009, 09:10 am The half an hour comment. Seemed out of the mood. GREAT STRIP!
51 -- Monday, February 23 2009, 09:45 am Ok, well, Ron's a dope. Lissa, you can do better!
And I didn't get that they weren't talking to each other until he said Mara. (Dumb julia.)
JGoh -- Monday, February 23 2009, 09:52 am Panel 3 was the giveaway for me. Actually, with your history for not getting to exactly what we want right away, I sort of guessed that this wasn't as it seemed right from the get-go. :)
Bullfrog -- Monday, February 23 2009, 11:21 am CK asked a while (like, a while while) back and I said we weren't done with Mara. I'm glad everyone's digging it - it was a good thing this strip came up over my break, because this took a while.
I'ma try to keep the pace up so that you guys don't get furious with me, but, uh, Wednesday may be a total non-sequitor to keep the mood light. It may also be hand-drawn. Just, uh, so you know.
Joe B -- Monday, February 23 2009, 02:55 pm Mara?! You gotta be kidding! One thing you're not is predictable.
Anyway we've established that Lissa's cell phone works. It knocks out one line of thought.
Joe B -- Monday, February 23 2009, 03:37 pm Doing in-betweens was an assistant's job in old animation. The main animator did key cells, which was every few cells (depending how fast the figure was moving), and the in-betweeners did the other cells to transition the figure from one key cell to the next. It got you the 10,000 hours of practice you need to get good.
crownover -- Monday, February 23 2009, 03:51 pm i was totally fooled. nice work!
Bullfrog -- Monday, February 23 2009, 06:18 pm Joe B, thanks for the info on in-betweens. I probably learned that on the Disney animation tour back in '91, but have since totally forgotten it. I think I conflated his line about in-betweens with his calling Pete's Dragon a forgotten hybrid.
I also like the reference to Outliers. Well done.
