The street encounters are always the weirdest.

Posted: 6:30 am, Friday, December 5th

I think I knew Denzel was a Republican, but Sam Raimi? I didn't see that one coming. It also took me a full day and three hours to realize who Dwayne Johnson was.

2.0 found these last weekend and has been gently reminding me ever since to post them on the site. I don't know why I kept forgetting, because I fucking adore them.

This one's my favorite so far. I wish Jack would actually say "get lost!" in the show.

In fact, it's almost unlikely that no one would have said the phrase "get lost" just coincidentally by now. It's been 100 days, after all.

Last one, I love "WALLLLLLLT!"

Super video-heavy day here on this bonny Friday. My girl Lily Allen has a new album dropping in two months, and a new video dropping at the next carriage break. I don't know how it's still profitable for labels/artists/whoever's got the pursestrings to fund videos anymore, but I like this one quite a bit. I prefer the ska beats from Alright, Still but this little tune has grown on me since the original demo earlier in '08.

Wait - I fucking missed this? Oh, crap. I'm in a weird iPod limbo while still trying to get my old laptop's iTunes onto my new laptop's iTunes, so I'm kind of on half-songage right now. One thing that I did have, though, was I Get Wet, and it's been a while since I've reveled in the full awesome stupidity of Andrew WK's debut album. MY GOD, what a fucking good time that is. You'd better get ready to run, 'cause here we come, you'd better get ready to die, get ready to die. Best lyricist of the decade. Stone.

I was totally ready to ignore the new Punisher movie until I read this and was forced to realize that Titus Pullus and McNulty were both in it. Fucking hell, guys, seriously?

I promise not to keep doing this, but I had the best freaking day yesterday. I was dropping some Bloom's Hierarchy on my kids, telling them the knowledge, understanding, application stuff, and they were demonstrating their grasp on it by asking me questions. With both my freshman classes, I had them completely riveting and mostly quiety, which is kind of like holding back the tide. Yesterday wasn't like being at work in the slightest. I had more energy when I got home than when I left. And I got to introduce the idea of institutionalized racism to my 8-9 kids, to boot. Now if only I had the slightest idea on how to get them interested in the Odyssey. Oh well.

Holy crap, tomorrow's St. Nicholas' day! Put your shoes out, gang.

Go Irish! Beat bye week!

You all know I love to complain, and having a whole new set of things to complain about really is top of the pops for me. So I present to you, the Twilight tag on Go Fug Yourself.

To think, a week ago, I had no idea how blindingly mediocre that book actually was.

You want to know how bad ND football is? We're a 3.5 point dog to BYE.

MJL -- Friday, December 5 2008, 07:38 am

Must be an away game.

Bullfrog -- Friday, December 5 2008, 08:38 am

Yeah, but homefield is usually only a 3-point swing, so on a neutral field, BYE would play us to a tie. And not the cool sort of tie like 0-0 against Army in '46, or 10-10 against State in '66. I'm talking a 0-0 shitathon like the '83 Civil War.

Bullfrog -- Friday, December 5 2008, 08:41 am

Scary fact I just found out about myself: Without looking it up, I can remember within one year the date of a football game between Oregon and Oregon State (thought it was '82).

I've never even been to Oregon. I hear it's lovely.

MNP -- Friday, December 5 2008, 08:46 am

Notre Dame plays Ohio State in basketball on Saturday at 4pm Eastern for those interested in watching a team ranked in the top 10. Televised on ESPNU.

Glad you had an excellent day teaching. Those definitely make up for all the rest. And they begin happening with more frequency the longer you teach (usually).

The old trick with the Odyssey is to also watch Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? Given all the recent movies that plunder Roman/Greek times (The kids don't really distinguish, so why should we to teach them?), the whole unit could have a lot of video content.

There are also several YA versions you could copy parts of (just search Amazon). And something tells me I've seen a graphic novel version.

Hope that helps.

CK -- Friday, December 5 2008, 09:33 am

When you come over this weekend, remind me about THE LIGHTNING THIEF by Rick Riordan, if I haven't given that to you yet. I think I have a picture-book version with illustrations by Alan Lee that is also quite beautiful (if I didn't give it away in my recent move).

Coach -- Friday, December 5 2008, 09:47 am

Not sure if anyone noticed (too busy crying away another shitty year at ND), but Rutgers absolutely raped, pillaged and plundered Louisville last night. Schiano... now that is a quality coach!

Bri -- Friday, December 5 2008, 10:31 am

Bullfrog~ You should come out to Oregon, it is quite lovely. I think you'd really like Portland. Friendly people, good coffee, amazing scenery, what's not to love?

Bullfrog -- Friday, December 5 2008, 11:07 am

The skag, I guess. Big heroin problem, right?

Just kidding, I hear the parks are fabulous.

MJL -- Friday, December 5 2008, 01:33 pm

Article in today's WSJ about the rise of SEC football includes this gem of a quote:

"Half the people in that stadium can't spell LSU," says political consultant James Carville, an LSU alumnus.

Can you really print something like that? Was the editor sleeping?

Miyaa -- Friday, December 5 2008, 01:34 pm

Portland's parks are fabulous. The best thing about Portland: Waking up on Saturday and having breakfast while watching college football. That's heaven.

Coach -- Friday, December 5 2008, 04:29 pm

You know what true heaven is... waking up, heading to the pub, getting a Guinness and a Full English while watching the Premiership.

Miyaa -- Friday, December 5 2008, 05:43 pm

Coach: That would work too.

Pat S. -- Saturday, December 6 2008, 11:52 pm

I too was rocking out to "Ready to Die" just the other day. I love how such a tough-ass song starts with a goofy, plinky intro.
