Comic for Wednesday, September 10, 2008

Posted: 6:30 am, Wednesday, September 10th
I put this up yesterday, but it was in the evening and maybe got missed - the three-day-a-week thing is buggin' me out, too. I went from spending daily time with not only y'all but Ron and Lissa and Jen and Pete and everybody, and it's really pretty freaking weird to cut that down after so long. I'm just so zonked at the end of every day, though, that I can't really justify doing five. Well, hell, actually, scratch justify and put in "conceive of". That said, I think I'll probably whip up a Five and Dime-ish for tomorrow - I don't like letting 9/11 pass without comment. What my comment might be, I have no idea, but I saw the lights the other night all the way from Flatbush, and they were as breath-taking and eerie as always.
So, uh, the hell is up in the world? I see America's taken a deep drink of the stupid juice, so that's, you know, horrifying. I'm doing my part, though - taught my second-period juniors about the Obama DNC speech. Oh, snap! 2.0 and the Coach are both semi- to full-on-freaking out, but I remain stout of heart. Palin's a cheap trick and little else.
I'm listening to this as the Sox are down to their final out - Paps blew a save, which is kind of crushing. Wilco also just posted a concert, but it's in MSG... I don't know how I feel about that. Wait, is it real MSG, or the WaMu theater at MSG... Nope, real MSG, but they're opening for Neil Young and Crazy Horse. This may kill my cred, I don't really know, but I went to the H.O.R.D.E. Fest in '97 where Beck and Neil Young were the twin headliners (bonus points if you can remember what H.O.R.D.E. stands for without Googling), and I bailed after Beck left stage. I wasn't too into Neil Young (at all)(a single iota) back then, and I don't think I am enough now to buy tickets just to see Wilco open to a disaffected New York crowd.
Teaching update: Digging it so far. Had my first Fellows class the other day - I'm taking grad courses while I'm doing all of this, still, and yikes, does that suck. Anyway, I'm in probably the top five or three situations - some of my friends are trapped in one of the lower levels of Hell. So, you know, it's not really schadenfreude, but I'm feeling pretty good about myself. I also got to drop the detention hammer hard on some of my freshmen yesterday, and, damn, did that whip the rest of them into shape. So I'm waiting for a few of my kids in 5/6 to open their mouths just like I know they will tomorrow, and then, bldow! It's on like Donkey Kong.
No idea how this dude found five minutes of viewable footage from Saturday's clusterfuck in the Bend, but he did. What the hell is that background music? Sounds like My Chemical Romance v. Dragonforce or something.
Oh, shit, man, Rocco died. Domers everywhere mourn.

e -- Wednesday, September 10 2008, 08:10 am I maintain optimism, but Obama needs to get his head back in the game. Let Biden fight his fight against her and keep Obama on McSame. Her interview (1st!!) with Charlie Gibson is on tomorrow (9/11 how convenient) so that should be lite on substance. Maybe she'll throw out a few sarcastic comments.
My favorite slogan recently: Jesus was a community organizer, Pontius Pilate was a governor.
What the Dems need is their own version of Swiftboat Veterans! Jon Stewart can't do it all himself.
SH -- Wednesday, September 10 2008, 08:42 am I'll share this with you and feel free to use it:
Mrs. GILF Huckabee
Low brow and in poor taste. Perhaps of use if Pete ever decides to discuss politics.
Wood -- Wednesday, September 10 2008, 08:47 am No worries on the new schedule Frog. Its just throwing my morning routine for a loop. I get into college park at about 6am so when i check the page and the comic isnt up i find myself hitting refresh for about an hour intermittenly until I realize that I wont be getting a new one.
Then I grumble to myself and move over to xkcd which, if you dont read it, is a phenomental webcomic. Try it out, it is MWF as well.
CK -- Wednesday, September 10 2008, 11:14 am I am slightly sharing 2.0's panic, but I think I'm just letting the media get to me. The debates will be key. Also Charlie Gibson acting like an actual journalist and asking Palin hard questions tomorrow night . . .

I am worried.
ad -- Wednesday, September 10 2008, 12:06 pm I'm not too worried for several reasons. Mainly, national polls don't matter because elections happen on a state level. This gives me hope (it's a look at the electoral map):

Pat S. -- Wednesday, September 10 2008, 06:11 pm I actually gave up on Obama's chances a few months back.
I'll vote for him, of course, but the past two elections have just made me realize how outnumbered the thinking people are in this nation. Even though, as my friend put it, the persistence of the Obama-Muslim rumor makes him want to "burn down a building", the rumor does in fact persist and is probably a huge contributor to his likely failure this fall. The rest of the people are paradoxically swayed against him because he's too smart. All this while the nation is more fed up than ever with a president from McCain's party. Do these things really indicate a nation smart enough to vote in its own interests?
I'm lucky enough to be doing pretty well, and that will probably continue to be the case no matter who wins. But watching the country screw itself yet again is just depressing. Major bummer, dudes.
