I'm amazed the troops don't take advantage of Pete's density more often.

Posted: 6:30 am, Wednesday, September 3rd

As a teacher (hot damn, I get to pull the moral superiority card on you all the time now!), I can truly attest that summer is over. So Pajiba offers a look back at the blockbusters that were. I still haven't seen Wall-E. I feel like a failure. I did finally see Persepolis, though, and have been meaning to talk about that for a really long time. It was very, very good, and totally... Wait, did I talk about this? Anyway, it wasn't what I thought it would be, and also, the fact that the Iranians were speaking in French was very problematic for me.

I like the bit at the end about Operation: Wine Cooler. That's good stuff. Otherwise, God, just drop out, McCain/Palin.

In a world where the movie trailer guy died! Yeah, I know, it was a lay-up. I should be ashamed of myself.

The MoMA has a new director, which doesn't have much to do with 2.0's job, but is still worth noting.

Hey, what the fuck, Times? You're too good to interview me for your back-to-school feature? God. Screw you.

A reminder that I've instituted a three-strip-a-week schedule for the forseeable future, and that I'll maybe try to get something up in the comments of some substance tomorrow, but that there will definitely be no strip.

Whooo! Thank you, Kevin White. todd, I'll pull your e-mail on Sunday so the spambotters don't grab you.

Not a lot to report - I made my initial home contact for a kid who has a hard time not talking constantly yesterday, so that was fun. I also have shortened my recovery time, so I'm back to close to human by about seven. I'm hoping it's even shorter today, since I'm giving the subway a shot. A nap would be nice.

2.0 and I caught about two seconds of the RNC last night. Tree said he understand McCain's five years as a POW now that he's sat through Rudi's speech. (9/11!) So far, my favorite RNC moment is this acapella singalong with Rage Against the Machine. Tom Morello literally saying, "bow wow wow wow chikka wow wow wow wow chikka" for the guitar riff in Bulls on Parade is hilarious, and kind of sad, but mostly hilarious.

I'm no fan of Granny Palin (oh, God, that voice!), but I think she did a good job of introducing herself and firing up the base. I don't agree with a lot of what she said (or mistated), but her performance was good.

The way I see it the GOP is sitting pretty - either they win this election and McCain finally(!) gets his day in the limelight. OR they lose and can say - we didn't have a good candidate, McCain was old and not really in line with the party.

PS: Cindy McCain - what was with that green dress!?!?

By the way, Medium-Large for the win: http://mediumlarge.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/medlarge702.jpg

2.0 -- Thursday, September 4 2008, 10:54 am

I agree with you e. Palin did a great job speaking last night. The Dem in me will now qualify that by saying that she didn't write her speech, it was more carefully vetted than she was. Let's see what she does when she is forced to speak off the cuff.

I don't get the sense that she even thinks about international issues (she's said as much herself actually), and living next to Russia does not mean you're an expert on Russian politics (I am sure Condi is silently seething at that suggestion). Sure she's cute and perky, but WTF is that gonna do for us in...oh...I don't know...the Middle East?

CK -- Thursday, September 4 2008, 11:39 am

She did a good job stylistically, but substance-wise, what did she say? Slams on Obama and community organizers (of all people), praise of McCain and country, lies about energy (if they want solar and wind power so badly, it would be nice if McCain actually VOTED for the alternative energy bill in the Senate this past summer) and Obama's tax policy, nothing about the economy. It was a speech straight out of the Rove playbook. I came away loathing her.

And her jacket -- could it be any more blah? Feh.

skt -- Thursday, September 4 2008, 11:42 am

and the lipstick joke! ugh.

Ted's Head -- Thursday, September 4 2008, 12:31 pm

I would agree that Palin didn't say too much - other than pander to the crowd far worse than any other political speech I've seen this season. I just can't wait for the VP debate. Biden must be licking his chops. I really hope he goes for blood.

e -- Thursday, September 4 2008, 01:12 pm

Here's an article "fact checking" her speech: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080904/ap_on_el_pr/cvn_fact_check

drolett -- Thursday, September 4 2008, 03:29 pm

just out of curiosity, do many candidates write their own stuff? i just assumed it was all penned by speech writers these days.

CK -- Thursday, September 4 2008, 04:13 pm

Obama takes input from others, but writes most of his own major speeches. (He also wrote his own books, unlike John McCain.

Gloria Steinem offers a great critique of Palin: http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la-oe-steinem4-2008sep04,0,7541303.story

e -- Thursday, September 4 2008, 06:13 pm

Drolett - there was an article in the Washington Post today about speechwriters.

ad -- Thursday, September 4 2008, 11:08 pm

What is a presidential candidate to do when he is vastly out-shined rhetorically by his vice-presidential running mate? McCain's speech was really bad-- rhetorically and content.

(Though I'm sure I'm posting this too late to have anyone see it.)
