Comic for Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

I received an e-mail from Barack Obama overnight. It was really nice that he thought to write last night, it was kind of a big one for him. I'm quasi-glad Hillary didn't do the reasonable thing and drop out last night, since I'd have to rework the first two panels today. The homeboy gave a pretty bad-ass chat down in NC, also, so give that a viewing if you get the chance.
I love the attention that the tabloids here in the Apple give to this Joba Chamberlain kid - it's like the world ended last night because he gave up a three-run shot to blow the game. He's the first player ever to have his number retired after 36 career innings pitched.
It's supposed to be a loverly eighty here today, and the park is calling.
Geez, not a lot going on. I need to get out more. Oh, I know. I'll have the Cooperstown pics for you tomorrow, and maybe something else that 15 set up. I'll tend to some things and there will be more tomorrow.

Bullfrog -- Wednesday, May 7 2008, 08:46 am Wake was outstanding last night, but I didn't even think of the implications of Timlin coming in to mop up the ninth. From the Globe:
"Got to look out for the 41-year-old and the 42-year-old," Wakefield said. "When's the last time guys that old have combined on a shutout?"
Research by the Elias Sports Bureau indicates that last night marked the first time since 1900 a team pitched a shutout using multiple pitchers all over the age of 40.
Bullfrog -- Wednesday, May 7 2008, 10:21 am Damn, that is pretty.

Miyaa -- Wednesday, May 7 2008, 11:54 am This on the heels of Jamie "Why did my father-in-law have to be Digger" Moyer schooling the newest pitching sensation (Schezer, whom I've seen a lot of in my days as a grad student at Missouri) and the retirement of Julio Franco. It's good to be a 40+ baseball player I suppose.
Especially if you're Tom Glavine.
Bullfrog -- Wednesday, May 7 2008, 12:01 pm Wait, Jamie Moyer's father-in-law is Digger? Phelps? Seriously? I had no idea.
It's a shame Julio didn't make it one more year in the bigs, to make 50 like he wanted. There was some sort of bad blood I could never figure out with him and the Mets last year. I doubt that helped.
Bullfrog -- Wednesday, May 7 2008, 12:06 pm I'll be damned! This must be something I don't know because of the lack of the cable.

I like in the scouting department, it talks about his devastating changeup. I don't think a changeup can be devastating.
Dan -- Wednesday, May 7 2008, 12:12 pm I guess it could be if the fastball was, say, 100 mph; the change of pace would knock people on their asses. But that's not Moyer, who throws at like 70 with the wind behind him.
CK -- Wednesday, May 7 2008, 03:31 pm As per today's strip:

Yowza.
Miyaa -- Wednesday, May 7 2008, 03:48 pm Moyer's fastball wouldn't break the 70 mph speed limit in most states. (75 in the west).
9-0 Cincy versus Chicago Cubs, all off of home runs, including three by one guy.
