Jen steps up the hate.

Posted: 7:25 am, Thursday, March 27th

So is the rule that if I don't write anything, everyone chats about something random all day? That's pretty cool, I am definitely down with that. I'm going to ruin it with a little linkage and a quick story today, but just ignore it if you have something else to talk about.

Nothing warms the heart of the unemployed like an article on super-cheap food. Granted, I'll have to get my ass to Spanish Harlem for this, but it's not like I'm doing anything else with my time. Sounds better than flavored dried crickets, that's for sure.

CK, 15, 2.0 and I are planning a trip up to the Hall of Fame in about a month, and I'll have no qualms at all about going now that I know that that dickweed Petroskey is out. Remember back to '03, when everyone who spoke against the war in some official capacity was immediately labeled as a traitor and probably a maniac? Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, of course, hated the idea of the war, so this former Reaganite running the Hall of Fame did not invite them to the Bull Durham 15th anniversary party at the Hall of Fame. Anyway, now he's out, because of - and I am *shocked* that a Republican administrator could possibly be guilty of this - financial irresponsibility. !!1!

Huh, weird segue here. Evidently, there was a Daffodil Project in the NYC parks to commemorate September 11. And 2.0 and I kicked most of the afternoon in Prospect Park yesterday, since it was finally something resembling nice out. We actually made our first trip to the Prospect Park Zoo, which is a nice little kind-of beginner's zoo, but it has a red panda, which is evidently super rare. Less than 2,500 in existence. I can't believe the Prospect Park Zoo has one. I also can't believe that I learned about it from my mother - I have *no* idea why she knew about it. She's amazing, folks.

Alright, I'm out.

Dear Lord, Wood, you are insanely educated.

MNP -- Thursday, March 27 2008, 08:29 am

in today's strip...in panel 4 I thought Ron had suddenly figured out Jen was in love with him...and then I re-read and saw the "Rob". Yeah, I need to learn how to read more closely.

Wood -- Thursday, March 27 2008, 08:37 am

I prefer to think of myself as stalwartly avoiding positive cash flow.

MJL -- Thursday, March 27 2008, 08:51 am

Yes, I'm a long-time reader, but humor my question: Is this series the first time that Jen's coat has shown up in the strip?

Mix of rain and snow today in Chi-town. It's becoming demoralizing. Bracket madness resumes tonight, so that's a bit of sunshine.

e -- Thursday, March 27 2008, 08:52 am

Wood - i am new to the Virginia/Maryland hate-fest, but are you allowed to go to Maryland after Va Tech? Fear the turtle!

I am having the toughest time finding a TV stand for the new LCD addition to my household. What is with Circuit City!?!? I went to check out one I liked online and it was $100 more in the store!!! I've heard they do this all the time. Whyfore?

Wood -- Thursday, March 27 2008, 09:21 am

I find that the most important thing in the ACC is hating Duke and Boston College. Since I went to VT for grad school I missed this boat and I ended up focusing my hatred more on UVA. Notre Dame helped to bolster my distaste for BC tho.

I dont think Ph.D. students are allowed to be interested in sports or school rivalry. Neither school is any good in any sports the other is good in so I should be able to escape this without an anuerism.

RAW -- Thursday, March 27 2008, 09:28 am

e, I had that happen when I bought a printer from Circuit City, and they matched the online price after I told them to look it up on their web site. Since then, I always buy online and pick it up at the store. Circuit City is not quite as shady as Best Buy, though, who got in trouble for having a separate in-store web site that does not display online discounts.

ad -- Thursday, March 27 2008, 10:10 am

Wood, I'll confirm your suspicion that PhD students are not allowed to be interested in sports or rivalries. I managed to drive all the way to campus--noticing the increasing frequency of burnt orange t-shirts--before realizing that there was probably a football game and I wouldn't be able to get parking. I also once wore red the day before the UT v. OSU game--not a smart idea.

MNP -- Thursday, March 27 2008, 10:34 am

the logic I've been told about the difference between in-store and online prices (at least, this is at Restoration Hardware for their furniture) is that the shipping cost is embedded in the in-store price and online you'll have to pay extra for shipping, so they lower the price to make the total the same. But then I guess you have folks like RAW who figure out a way around the whole system...

Bullfrog -- Thursday, March 27 2008, 11:17 am

I got a deal on my wireless router that way. I went to the Best Buy across the street from my (old) office to check out the routers and ask questions, went back to the office to order it off the internet, and then went right back to pick it up again. Saved like $20 that way.

MJL, Boecker's been in the strip like a million times. I know because I have to look up the order of the colors in the German flag every time I draw the damn thing.

Miyaa -- Thursday, March 27 2008, 12:13 pm

Huh. Didn't know there was such a thing as a Red Panda. Cute little guy.

Of all the teams in the Big East, it's Villenova who gets into the Sweet Sixteen. And they'll probably win or lose by a point or two against Kansas.

What is it with baseball teams and patches? Apparently the Yankees and Mets are going to have so many patches on their pinstripes this year, you'd think they're trying to quit smoking. (And seriously, why have a patch honoring Shea Stadium? Worst stadium design ever.)

e -- Thursday, March 27 2008, 12:16 pm

So the best plan would be to go in the store with your iPhone and order it online while talking to the clerk. Then show him the screen and ask to pick it up. Awesome!

Grad school fans: I found the people in grad school who got into sports were the ones who didn't go to an undergrad with a D1 program. The rest of us maintained loyalty to the undergrad alma mater. Football season was great - I'd tailgate with the grad school crowd and then head to a bar to watch ND while they went inside the stadium.

crownover -- Thursday, March 27 2008, 12:42 pm

This is why I'm going back to ND for grad school -- I would have to have to change my loyalties :)

Wood -- Thursday, March 27 2008, 02:14 pm

Crownover, the only grad students worth tailgating with at Notre Dame are the MBAs. We may be soulless, evil, profit focused, money grubbing whores BUT... we also have a strong understanding of logistics, operations and presentation.

Most of us have maintained our loyalties but added ND as an ammendment to them. The whole football thing is too embedded in the campus to survive disliking irish football, even as a grad student.

crownover -- Thursday, March 27 2008, 03:05 pm

Wood, that's the group I'm joining (well, the MBA in Nonprofit program), so we're all good :)

Bullfrog -- Thursday, March 27 2008, 04:25 pm

There's nothing that really sparks your confidence as much as looking up how to beat a boss at a video game on GameFAQs and reading, "Really, all the advice I can give you is to pray." Fucking 16-bit games are the greatest.

MJL -- Thursday, March 27 2008, 04:37 pm

I know that being jobless comes with a complete set of very real and serious stress-inducing circumstances.

That being said, right now I'm pretty damn jealous of Bullfrog.

Good luck with the video game, sir.

crownover -- Thursday, March 27 2008, 04:58 pm

there's quidditch at Middlebury? madness. http://withleather.com/post.phtml?pk=5369

Bullfrog -- Thursday, March 27 2008, 05:00 pm

I totally got waitlisted at Middlebury.
