Comic for Thursday, March 6th, 2008

The impetus behind this one was actually more those t-shirts you see advertised all over the interweb, more than anything political. Although I did think a Bush/Cheney '08 shirt was mildly amusing, before realizing there's probably not much of a market for that. (This guy disagrees.)
Nice work, Irish.
I don't know what made me think of it all of a sudden, but I remembered those Mario flash movies from way the hell back in the day. Well, the dude finished them a good long time ago now, but I'd never seen the final chapter 'til today. It, um, ends kind of abruptly, but is pretty sweet all the same.
I haven't been reading the Onion political cartoons in a while - they got shuffled way down to the bottom with the latest redesign - but, man, I love these things. This one was guest-written by Ayn Rand!
Mario Kart Wii will evidently include a feature that lets you just watch races. This will be astoundingly popular with 2.0, the only person I know who enjoys *watching* video games get played more than playing them herself.
Tripped across a random blog yesterday with some funny pictures. The elevators in my office building are crazy fucking slow to react to anyone hitting a button, so this one made me chuckle, and I enjoyed this one because I have some issues paying our rent from time to time. And then there was an awesome little bit on a sammich shop in Soho having to close, and then reopening.
And finally, a quick little tech post from the Times. I'm posting it partly because I'm giddy that Blu-Ray won the format war (now release the Lord of the Rings on Blu-Ray!), and partly because next week there's a guy who lost an 800-page novel when his PC crashed. Having written an 800-page novel, I can tell this guy he needs to edit, severely and constantly. Also, my basement apartment flooded while I was on about page 600 of that novel, and my laptop was on the floor that night. Apartment insurance to the rescue, and I had a new motherboard and an intact hard drive in about a week. That's mostly my PSA for renter's insurance. Highly recommended to all renters. It's really super-cheap. (I keep mentioning it lately because I have to renew our policy... Um, today, actually.)

MNP -- Thursday, March 6 2008, 07:58 am Maybe NC's decision to hold it's primary on May 5 wasn't that crazy after all...apparently we get a 30% bonus for doing it (let me know if this link doesn't work, I think this is part of the free-access wsj.com, but I'm not positive).

2.0 -- Thursday, March 6 2008, 08:06 am Mind you, it's not like I find watching video games all that exciting either. It's just the cross bear.
Ondy -- Thursday, March 6 2008, 08:16 am You're not alone, I too like watching video games being played better than playing them. Mostly because I suck at them so much.
Miyaa -- Thursday, March 6 2008, 09:42 am There's like a whole genre of You Tube devoted to video game watching.
Most likely VP candidate for McCain...Jeb Bush. As in Florida Governor Jeb Bush. Replace Bush/Chaney with McCain /Bush, and you have a winner. (And if the Democratic Party is listening, the worst thing you can do is have a Obama/Clinton or Clinton/Obama ticket. Just let Obama pick anyone but Clinton. Please.)
Bullfrog -- Thursday, March 6 2008, 09:48 am Yvette Clark is getting a beating from the Voice, and Windsor Terrace gets glossed over in the nabes she represents.

Bullfrog -- Thursday, March 6 2008, 09:51 am I disagree... I think a Clinton/Obama ticket would have legs. Won't happen, especially now that this is getting dragged on into a fourth brutal month, but I think Clinton/Obama would do well.
I also think McCain/Jeb! is political poison. Sure, they'd get Florida by rigging it, but Shitwit's at 30-35% approval.

Bullfrog -- Thursday, March 6 2008, 10:02 am This old Onion article reminds me, for some reason, of Sweaty.

Tempest621 -- Thursday, March 6 2008, 10:23 am Obama/Clinton might work, but it seems like they have been at each others throats with too many ill words passed between them for that. What I am curious about is if Clinton wins (which she won't), is who she would pick for her VP. The VP's only two functions are to cast a vote to break a tie in either the senate or the Electoral Collage. That's it! Anything else they do is what is allowed them by the President. This usually involves being some sort of goodwill ambassador to countries the President is too busy to visit. Recently with Eleanor Roosevelt, the first lady took part in performing that role as well.
So let me ask you this, who would want to compete with Bill Clinton for that role? As a foreign leader, who would you rather deal with, some senator you've never met, or a former president that you have had dealings with in the past?
Just a thought...
Bullfrog -- Thursday, March 6 2008, 10:30 am I'd say the VP's role is even more trivial than that - I think it's just to bring in voters that the presidential candidate him/herself wouldn't necessarily attract. (Which is why Clinton/Obama makes more sense to me than Obama/Clinton.)
Living in New York, the Senator I know of that's closest to Hillary is Chuck Schumer, but there's no freaking way both NY senators are on the ticket.
How's that Webb dude in Virginia doing, E? I know he's only been on the job not even two years now, but he's technically from the south, and is ex-military. (Note to anyone actually informed: I am just randomly guessing here.)
ad -- Thursday, March 6 2008, 11:07 am Bill Richardson might get the nod for VP. And he can work with Clinton (Bill) b/c he was in his cabinet (Energy Sec.). Though Clinton (Hillary) already has the Latino vote, so Richardson isn't much help there. And I think she'll go with a gov. if she can-- two senators on one ticket doesn't seem like it would fly. Granholm from Michigan was a potential pick, but I don't think she was born in the US and that might cause some problems.
In some ways, I think Richardson would be a really strong VP for Obama.
Bullfrog -- Thursday, March 6 2008, 11:19 am So, Granholm is just like McCain, ad? ;-)
Bullfrog -- Thursday, March 6 2008, 11:19 am That's right. The winking emoticon.
Miyaa -- Thursday, March 6 2008, 01:28 pm My point is at this point while the primary voters may want a Bush or a Clinton, I'm not sure that is what the general public will want. We've had a Bush or a Clinton for the past sixteen years, and I don't know if they're ready for the possibility of another Bush as VP or another Clinton as either Pres or VP.
I'm just saying I think a lot of people are ready for someone new to step to the scene, and that alone may push Obama all the way to the top come November.
e -- Thursday, March 6 2008, 01:31 pm I think the strong politician from VA is John Warner - gov a few years ago that was really popular (we have 1 term limits). I do think he is making a US senate run, though.
Don't discount Jeb! he's managed to keep clear of his brother within the GOP.
Bullfrog -- Thursday, March 6 2008, 01:43 pm You have a one-term limit at governor? Wow. I think you're allowed to hold it forever in New York. New Yorkers, remember when Pataki was going to run for president? Hi-larious.
I agree with the new to the scene. And, geez, actually, it's been 20 years, hasn't it? Yeah, 20.
ad -- Thursday, March 6 2008, 01:44 pm Yeah, I'd heard McCain was born outside of the US. But wasn't it on a military base? Granholm was born in Canada (I think).
Interesting that if they open up the rules for McCain that would allow Granholm in.
Bullfrog -- Thursday, March 6 2008, 01:46 pm Yeah, down in Panama. It was just some ridiculous thing that the Times wrote in a blog or something and CNN entertained itself with for a night.
Pat -- Thursday, March 6 2008, 02:24 pm Dems: No way will we see Obama / Clinton or vice versa. It would be a humiliation for either of them. I'm predicting Bill Richardson for VP, no matter which of the two wins the nomination.
GOP: McCain / Brownback. Dude has to pick a right-wing loony to solidify the Limbaugh crowd and the evangelical crowd behind the Republican ticket. Otherwise they'll stay home.
My home state's primary actually matters!
e -- Thursday, March 6 2008, 05:19 pm yeah, one term - you start a lame duck. I think you can run again, just not consecutively.
