Comic for Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

Posted: 7:55 am, Wednesday, February 27th

There's so much to say about this torture playlist, I don't even know where to begin. I mean, there's some legitimately good music on there (Rage, 2Pac), and then there's some stuff that I don't think would bother the detainees as much as the military thinks it would (Born in the USA), stuff that I doubt they really could understand and could basically be any death metal (Fuck Your God by the luminaries, Deicide), and then the truly maddening (Meow Mix, Barney, matchbox 20). Where's the Achy-Breaky Heart? I guess they decided that didn't work during the Waco standoff?

I am so jazzed about Space Man making the Sox hall of fame. That is awesome. Leftist lefties of the world, unite!

I guess I'm too lazy to embed video today, but Stereogum dug up the video to Nada Surf's Popular yesterday. 2.0 thinks I have an abnormal affection for that song, but, damn, it's just so awesome.

Kurt Vonnegut would have a problem with the way I tell the story of the gang in this strip.

This dude visited every Starbucks in Manhattan in a day. I totally don't recommend that. (Nor does Cousin Larry.)

I love the background bar tv in this one!

Leave it to a Human Goiter to not recognize the beauty of a shirt like this.

I've actually thought about Jimmy Kimmel twice since in 2008, which is twice more than I have in the last four years or so. In case you haven't seen it, this is the sequel to Sarah "I'm More Mean Than Funny, Really" Silverman's, "I'm Fucking Matt Damon."

This is the most pathetic thing I've ever read about collitch basketball.

I *love* Jen's shirt.

Bullfrog -- Wednesday, February 27 2008, 09:54 am

She's sported that a few times in the past. I'm actually drinking from an 01.20.09 coffee mug Crownover gave me for Christmas at the moment.

MJL -- Wednesday, February 27 2008, 09:59 am

Big Ben turns 4 today. If you guys don't get crackin' he's really not going to have anybody to play with at the reunions.

Here's his debut... http://www.fivebuckstofriday.com/archive/archive091504.html

Some day when he's 13 and angry at me he's going to google that and turn me into DCFS. (Will it still be google in 9 years?)

Bullfrog -- Wednesday, February 27 2008, 10:15 am

Oh, damn, happy birthday. Also, that is probably the worst strip I've done in the run of the comic.

Also also, we should probably not hand Ben cans of beer anymore.

Ye gods, you've kept a child alive for four years. I never would've imagined this was possible in collitch.

Miyaa -- Wednesday, February 27 2008, 10:28 am

It can be done. It can be done.

I'm surprised she hasn't done a routine where she claims to be Alicia Silverman's long-lost sister or something. And yeah, she's the heir to that loud mouth woman whom you see only on televised roasts.

MJL -- Wednesday, February 27 2008, 10:29 am

They're really not too tough to keep alive. They start making noise when they need something, and then don't stop making noise until you figure it out.

Keeping said child well-behaved and socially adjusted... that's a whole different story.

2.0 -- Wednesday, February 27 2008, 11:24 am

Awww. I remember that day! It was my first experience with the insanity that is Notre Dame football in the Bend.

Sweaty -- Wednesday, February 27 2008, 12:16 pm

Hey sorry I didn't call you back the other day. I'm with you on the Colon signing. Not a bad pickup for $1.25 million. The Sox may be able to get a bunch of decent starts out of him.

Of course it has to be depressing to have won the Cy Young 2 years ago and only be able to sign for a little over a million bucks. Clemens was getting 8 figures and only pitching 2/3 of the season. I'm guess by the looks of him though, that Bartolo never took B12 in his life.

The Deadspin book tour seems to have ended in my favorite bar last night.

Pete -- Wednesday, February 27 2008, 02:35 pm

For some reason every mix cd I have from that era contains Nada Surf and Marcy's Playground...and for some reason I'm fine with that. weird.

Bullfrog -- Wednesday, February 27 2008, 02:38 pm

Whoa, Sex and Candy. Haven't thought about that song in years. That was #1 on the Bear in South Bend for something like thirty straight weeks. I couldn't figure it out.
