Comic for Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

Posted: 7:55 am, Wednesday, February 13th
OK, back to the ladies for today.
This is a week old, but for some reason, I was actually wondering last week if there was anyone left from WWI. I'm shocked to learn there actually is a US vet left alive.
Man, old-school airline stewardess outfits are so awesome.
I am very excited about Diary of the Dead. Retrocrush was down with it on the podcast, and I've heard nothing but pretty good buzz so far.
Tomorrow's Valentine's Day, and I am sooooooo screwed as far as having anything set and good to go for poor 2.0. I have a handy list of what *not* to give, and how *not* to act, but, uh, yeah. Shoot.
Man, I haven't thought about the Big Me video in forever.
Another round of ass-whuppings by the homeboy. I was out and about last night, wandering in the snow, but I think I heard Hillary was planning on shutting her yap for a change and not delivering a condescendinng speech about why it's OK that Obama won the capital of the confederacy. Did that wind up happening, or could she not help herself?

2.0 -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 08:09 am Pete! Yesterday's analysis of delegates/states was amazing. I think Hil could use you on her team. Glad to see that your powers of observation are on the right side of things!
I think Clinton's "yeah, but..." remarks are beginning to tire her base ( as per last nights polling results!). Now she's not going to bother with Wisconsin either. Does she not realize she's running the risk of insulting small state voters. I wonder what she plans to say to all the black/activist/mid-westerners should she make it to the general election. My guess is something like "now that your vote is meaningful, let me tell you why you should vote for me."
Zero -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 08:46 am I'm not a fan of Sarah Silverman, but I have to hand it to her, this is hysterical. NSFW, unless you have headphones and privacy.

Bullfrog -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 09:25 am The rap breakdown in the middle is hilarious. I don't know why I haven't posted that earlier, but, yeah, that's about the funniest thing I've ever seen Silverman do. And anything with Damon is by far the funniest thing ever on the Kimmel show.
Miyaa -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 09:49 am Bullfrog: Godiva Chocolate and do her laundry. That'll make her day.
Bullfrog -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 09:51 am TV Guide has a pretty good breakdown as to whether or not you'll be seeing any of your favorite TV shows again 'til fall, right here:

Bullfrog -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 09:51 am I am actually banned from touching 2.0's laundry, but part 1 is a good call.
2.0 -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 09:57 am Oddly, I don't like other people doing my laundry. It weirds me out. The only time I let Jeremiah do my laundry I had mono and couldn't get out of bed.
Honestly, I can't think of anything I would like that I don't already have, or isn't already done. I guess if he wrote all my cover letters for me that would be awesome. I don't think I can really expect that though.
zERO -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 10:13 am I was banned from laundry as well by Mrs. Zero for a while because somehow it was my fault for not knowing she put regular bleach in the color-safe bleach bottle. Yeah, I don't know either. Anyway, all that went out the window once she got pregnant the first time, so don't lose your mad laundry skills.

Bullfrog -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 10:15 am Fun article all the way around from the WaPo.

Miyaa -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 10:17 am Oh, and if you're keeping score:
Clinton......1,205
Obama........1,232 (3rd Quarter)
If this were a college football game, Clinton would be taking a time-out right about now.
MNP -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 10:27 am I've just decided a few ruined shirts (usually shrunk) are a fine cost for letting Mr. MNP do my laundry. and then he has to forgive me when I dye everything pink by accidentally putting in one of our deadly red napkins. Fair play.
2.0 -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 10:35 am And actually, now that you got me thinking about it Miyaa, I am more of a cheese person. I adore cheese. So lets say we either go out for a cheese tasting menu, or we eat in and get some cheese from the wonderful world of Bierkraft.
Valentines Day problems solved!
ad -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 10:39 am A brilliant student of mine called Valentine's Day "Singles Awareness Day" and I've officially boycotted ever since.
I also appreciate that the local NPR station is doing an anti-Valentines Day on Friday--playing all that good break up, crazy girl/boyfriend, broken heart music. Very fun. They're also doing a 2-day fund drive and the gift is the 2-CD set of Valentines & anti-Valentines music.
Pete -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 10:51 am Glad it was of some help! Good night last night - but I think Ohio and Texas are going to be monsters. The numbers I was most impressed with from yesterday were turnouts. Between all 3 primaries there were 1.8 million votes cast for Democratic candidates and only 766,223 for Republican candidates. I think Va. was an open primary, but pretty impressive, nonetheless.
Bullfrog -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 11:14 am My parents, after raising me in the woods with limited outside contact and four television channels, recently got cable and high-speed internet. I just got this e-mail from my mother:
"Purdue just beat Mich. State--it was a good game. Dad now has the Westminster Dog show going. They are judging toy dogs at the moment."
The idea of my parents watching random Big 11 matchups in early February and then the Westminster Dog Show is kind of blowing my mind.
Miyaa -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 11:47 am Mmm...Bierkraft. Wine, crackers and cheese sounds really good right about now.
Bullfrog: Wait until you catch them getting aroused while watching one of the adult pay-per-view channels.
Bullfrog -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 11:51 am Holy shit, man.
MJL -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 11:53 am That was a total party foul, Miyaa. :-)
MJL -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 11:54 am It sure the heck made me laugh, though.
crownover -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 01:25 pm i love mom and pop frog, so that was just disturbing.
MJL -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 01:37 pm http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/12/health/research/12musc.html?em&ex=1203051600&en=627f6a21952d029a&ei=5087%0A
Here's something to clear our minds. If you have the time, read the whole thing. It's a good blow-by-blow on the scientific process. Try not to think about how they were making the mice swim to the point of exhaustion, though.
My wife has informed me that it takes the American science grad students about a year to get over making jokes about PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences), in which getting published is 2nd only in prestige to Cell Magazine.
Finally (i'll shut up after this...), can anybody help me understand the conflict of interest mentioned about the folks at Columbia?
2.0 -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 01:49 pm re: MJL's Article: Didn't Appalachian State (mentioned as participating in the study) do unusually well in football last year?
MJL -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 02:06 pm They beat U. of Michigan in their first game of the season, which was an unprecedented upset.
"No Division I-AA team had beaten a team ranked in The Associated Press poll between 1989 and 2006, and it's unlikely that it had ever happened before. The Division I subdivisions were created in 1978."
As for the rest of App State's season? No idear.
MJL -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 02:10 pm ... and yes, the reason for you asking the question was lost on me until just now.
Oy. Or maybe, "Oi."
Miyaa -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 02:55 pm App State won the Division I-AA National Championship, in case you didn't know, against a Delaware team that beat another D-I A school. I can't remember which team it was, but I want to say it was something like Clemson.
Bullfrog -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 03:06 pm 'Twas Navy. Who then beat... Oh, fuck, my head.
CK -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 03:27 pm As I've learned from working on many British books, "Oi" is a specifically UK/Ireland interjection used to get attention, equivalent to our "Hey!" "Oy" is a Yiddish expression of annoyance or resignation.
Fun fact of the day.
Bullfrog -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 03:38 pm Really? Huh! I think I've been misspelling oy vey.
tree -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 03:39 pm "Oi" is one of my favorite interjections of all time (learned from Drew, Bullfrog).
Bullfrog -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 03:47 pm I think it's on the Brooklyn Bridge, but on one of the routes out of Brooklyn, there is a sign that says, "Leaving Brooklyn. Oy vey!" That Marty Markowitz sure is a card.
Miyaa -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 04:49 pm (Insert a "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" joke here.)
So, have we decided on cheese and wine for V-Day? (I'm going to have to go get me a wheel of Gouda.)
KT -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 06:20 pm I am just realizing now that the Texas and Ohio primaries aren't until March 4th... heck the f--- this is going to go on forever... I guess that's what happens when the campaigning starts years before the actual election.
Pat S. -- Wednesday, February 13 2008, 11:42 pm Here's a list of surviving WWI guys:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surviving_veterans_of_World_War_I
Not a lot of them. Did you know the UK lost more soldiers in WWI than in WWII? But you barely even hear about that war in this country.
