Comic for Thursday, February 7th, 2008

Dear God, what was I thinking with Mena's patterned vest?

Posted: 7:55 am, Thursday, February 7th

Not a bad day for the Irish yesterday - probably the number one class in the country after 'Bama shuttles its non-qualifiers off to a JuCo, and a romp over Seton Hall on the road. Up next is Marquette, the biggest challenge of the season to the home-winning streak. Also, how does one not academically qualify for Alabama? I'm not denegrating the university at all, but the SEC is relatively famous for not requiring a Goddamn thing of their athletes, anyway. Don't they have Swahili, like the UW?

Wait, KT and Tree, does this mean you guys are SOL? That sucks, man.

Sweet interview with Leisure Suit Larry creator Al Lowe yesterday at some gaming site I've never heard of. Also, strange story about the dude who created the Police Quest games:

AL: Jim Walls [the police officer who co-wrote the games] had never written anything longer than a police report, but he had great stories to tell. Ken happened to be playing racquetball with him when Jim started regaling him with great tales of his highway patrol days. Ken said, “You should write a game!” Jim had just retired from the force after an incident where a perp came up to his car windshield, pointed a big .57 magnum pistol, aimed it right through the windshield at Jim’s face and pulled the trigger. All Jim could think of was, “I can’t get my damned seatbelt undone!” Fortunately, the gun mis-fired. But Jim had had enough and retired. So he had time to play racquetball, and then he wrote a game.

Also from that site, it figures that the day I give up video games for Lent, I learn of the existence of a flash game where you run over dinosaurs with your Jeep. Life is unfair.

And the Voice piles on Giuliani, now that he's out of the race. In a way, I'm sorry he didn't keep at it further, if only for the Voice to really get going on the bastard.

One final note before I go. Anticipating the beginning of the baseball season, a little cheery sign for Sox fans that, sure, we've got a ridiculous payroll these days, but that doesn't mean our front office still isn't smart. (Wicked smaht, whatever you want to say.)

Bullfrog -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 07:41 am

I hate it when other web comics think of awesome things first.

http://scarygoround.com/?date=20080207

I am, as you may imagine, constantly angry.

MNP -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 08:01 am

The Irish beat Seton Hall by 30 last night! We're rolling in the Big East...

Bullfrog -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 09:00 am

My parents recently got cable, and apparently my dad spends most of his time watching the Food network and collitch hoops. I get a phone call after every Irish victory these days.

Bullfrog -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 09:10 am

I fucking love that the Robot Genius gave his signing day presser with his ashes on yesterday. That is awesome.

MNP -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 09:16 am

So apparently Hillary had to loan her campaign $5 million last month...and some staffers are working without pay...definitely signs of weakness from the old fundraising power house. http://www.newsday.com/news/local/politics/ny-uscash0207,0,4447370.story

MNP -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 09:20 am

and, as a follow-up, Barak has raised over $7 million in just a day and a half...pretty darned impressive... http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/samgrahamfelsen/CGGpp

Bullfrog -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 09:24 am

I know - 15 really opened up the pocket book, evidently.

Wood -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 10:05 am

Pete was the pick-me-up my day needed. Well played young man.

Miyaa -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 10:16 am

If I ever get cable, I would be so watching the Food Network. That and the Weather Channel, which is sadly about as much about the day's weather as MTV is about Music Video these days.

My cable lineup would pretty much be Food Network, Home and Garden, BBC America, Weather Channel, CNBC, MSNBC (mostly for Olbermann) and all of the sports cable stations, even the pay-per-view sports channels.

KT -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 10:17 am

I'm sure the Spice Girls will be the consummate performers that they've always been, with or without behind the scenes in-fighting. And the article doesn't say a thing about dates being cancelled that are already scheduled, just that no future dates will be scheduled. So, don't worry about us Michelangelo. BTW - Budget is coming with us! Which will further recreate the original time that Budget and Tree saw them in London.

Bullfrog -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 10:36 am

For anyone wondering, Michelangelo was my name in freshman-year Italian class, because my actual name doesn't translate, and because I draw. Although 'Rana Toro' wouldn't've been so bad.

Bullfrog -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 10:37 am

Tree, feel like sharing your Italian name?

tree -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 11:15 am

Fabio.....yeah, that's right.

Bullfrog -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 11:18 am

The similarity is eerie.

tree -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 12:01 pm

Did you see Pedro was engaging in cockfighting down in the D.R.? So awesome...

MNP -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 12:37 pm

apparently Romney is dropping out...

MJL -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 01:52 pm

I heard it first from MNP, and then again on the TV when I went down to the cafe.

Pretty cool soccer pic in this article: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/soccer/02/06/bc.soc.mexico.us2.ap/index.html?eref=si_topstories

And finally, if I could be allowed one more, it looks like the English Premier League will have 10 regular season games outside of England, 2 games in each of 5 cities, all in one weekend. I look forward to some pretty cool footage on the following Monday's Sportscenter, and, as if my opinion matters, think that they are taking a really cool approach to bringing their league global. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/soccer/02/07/bc.soc.premierleague.ove.ap/index.html?eref=si_topstories

I know... Sports Illustrated. I scoured the far corners of the superhighway to get those links.

Bullfrog -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 01:54 pm

Later, Mittford.

Bullfrog -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 01:56 pm

Huh. That would be kind of cool, MJL. I still think I'd rather see one of their home games, though. Minus the hooligans.

Bullfrog -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 01:56 pm

Has anybody ever read Among the Thugs? (Aside from 2.0.) It's chilling.

Bullfrog -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 02:00 pm

“Because I love America in this time of war, I feel I have to stand aside for our party and our country,” [Mitt] said.

Yeah, I fucking *love* America in this time of war. I'm only lukewarm towards it in peacetime. And the first Gulf War didn't do much for me, I have to admit. But this time of war? Fuck, man, I love it.

2.0 -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 02:43 pm

Poor Mitt-ens. I will miss his plastic hair and blank expression.

For some reason the NY Times gives Hillary a lot more delegates than other sources I've looked at. Apparently they are not swept up in the Yes We Can-ness of Mr. Obama.

I am loving the impoverished state of her campaign. Too bad all her rich friends have met their donation limit.

In the words of Nelson Muntz "Ha-ha"

Bullfrog -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 02:52 pm

Wow, busting out Nelson's last name. Did you have to look that up? Nice work.

2.0 -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 03:08 pm

erm...no.

Ok, yes I did.

Bullfrog -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 03:46 pm

No worries. These days, it may take me a few minutes to come up with.

I still can't believe I blanked on Tobias Funke two weeks ago.

15's Little Sister -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 04:46 pm

Hey, speaking of Mitt,he may have a future in peddling Dr. Romney's 100%-Natural Good-Time Conservative Fakery Family Band Solution.

Bullfrog -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 04:55 pm

Damn, now you know who randomly texted you to find out Tobias Funke's name.

Wood -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 09:23 pm

Proctoring exams for professors is one of the many labors the graduate assistant gets here in South Bend. I have a habit of getting chosen often because I appear to be able to carry large crates of paper and can give students suitably unhelpful and ambiguous but seemingly intelligent answers to questions. Not the point, this took me to the engineering school for some reason and *gasp* there are NERDS at Notre Dame!

I almost cried. We dont have them in the Mendoza School ever. Ive never felt so close to or at home compared to this day of uber-nerd discovery. I think I might just go back tomorrow and reminiss about RPI and VT.

Im a nerd too, I just covered it by playing football and by fashioning my dashing good looks.

Bullfrog -- Thursday, February 7 2008, 11:07 pm

Oh, hell, man, I could've told you this pretty early on. I would call myself a nerd, but I'm more of a dork, really. I definitely lived near some nerds freshman year, though. Although I suppose one can more accurately be described as a creep. But, hell, yeah, there's nerds at Notre Dame.

Wood -- Friday, February 8 2008, 01:59 am

I had always suspected they were there... I thought I had glimpsed them... But when I entered Fitzpatrick today...

NERDS! I think my joy was more due to being stuck in Mendoza for almost 9 months straight, that and the nerd population at turtle creek is sharply limited. Our (the MBA's) interactions with the undergrads are limited almost to the point of absurdity so I see students on campus but never a real nerd. Even the MBAs who are in the five year undergrad program dont come close to qualification.

Its hard to explain, my elation. I got so giddy that I made a joke about Lewis Structures and a got a chuckle out of some randoms walking by. I almost feel like I should run back with my enthalpy repitoire.
