Comic for Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Yes, I'm talking about What Not to Wear. I know, I know.

Posted: 7:15 am, Thursday, January 24th

After one day in the office, damn, am I ready for a break. Back to jury duty with me! Unfortunately, that means conversation and posting will probably be slower 'round here today, but I think we've only got four days of this left. I hope. Everyone at the office was like, "Wow, we haven't seen you all year," which is probably not a good sign.

I can’t wait to see how hideous these things are going to be. Does this mean LeBron is going to come to the Knicks at some point? Because that may make the Knicks less hilarious, and I hate that. New York sports coverage is best when things are a total clusterfuck for the teams. Because when they're good, you get the FAN treating stuff like this with utmost seriousness.

RAW pointed me out to Lasagna Cat yesterday, a bizarre acting-out-of and then demolition-of Garfield comics. This one is the best, because there's no way a Final Fantasy sequence can go wrong. (Unless you make an entire movie out of it.)

(Full disclosure: I like the Final Fantasy movie.)

Speaking of sub-par comic strips, I doubt any of you subject yourselves to Gil Thorp on a daily basis, but, man, that strip is batshit crazy sometimes. Here are the best and worst panels of '07, as compiled by the Milford Times, a masochistic site that chronicles Gil's daily.. sittings. Seriously, no one making a living off of drawing has a worse sense of perspective than the artist at Gil Thorp. It's admirable, honestly.

Alright, back tomorrow.

Oh god. Mrs. Zero watches that show so she can get angry at how mean the hosts are and what horrible taste they actually have. I'd put the black-haired witch through a wall, methinks.

You will enjoy tomorrow's strip then, Zero.

I appreciate the seamless transfer of the coffee mug, with Pete then taking a sip. Excellent work. It's like they're married.

MJL -- Thursday, January 24 2008, 10:06 am

Oh shit. I get it. He's examining the mug to see if there's booze in it.

I'll go put some coffee in mine now.

drolett -- Thursday, January 24 2008, 11:59 am

i'm checking in late on the whole extra-body-parts conversation, but i have a question. what is the function of tonsils? i think it has something to do with fighting infection, somehow, but all mine do is get sore and possibly infected, so...

i would've offered this question yesterday, but i had a really sore throat and i was distracted.

Pat -- Thursday, January 24 2008, 12:17 pm

Lord, how I hate that show. And yet my wife loves it. She claims they're doing the subjects a "service". Shredding the self-esteem of a clearly issues-having individual and setting unrealistic budgetary expectations is clearly a fantastic service!

I'll give props to the dude though for going to NU. The chick though is unforgivable.

2.0 -- Thursday, January 24 2008, 01:30 pm

Wow. Yikes guys. I would agree with your wife Pat, they are doing these people a service. First off, people should spend more money on less clothing. Quality clothes lasts longer and looks better. In the long run it's more economical. Cheap clothes tend to look shitty in a month and need to be replaced (which, mind you, is also wasteful).

Second, it's not OK to wear ND slippers out in public. It's just not. I don't care where you live. Those people already had low self-esteem if they'd allow themselves to walk around in sweatpants and over-sized stained t-shirts. By the end of the show they all feel great about themselves, have a realistic outlook about their bodies, and a %5,000 dollar wardrobe. I'd happily take a little ribbing for that kind of service.

Dan -- Thursday, January 24 2008, 02:04 pm

Ya know... I never did get the relationship between Pete and Ron. It's almost impossible to think of Pete being a worse compatriot to Ron than he already is. He's a jerk to him, treats him like utter garbage a lot of the time.. I can see why Pete puts up with Ron (he's a freeloader!), but I'm not sure why Ron puts up with Pete. I guess he's like a parasite who's attached himself to Ron and won't leggo. (I remember when Pete came back to live with Ron, and it didn't make a lot of sense then, given his jerkiness..)

Bullfrog -- Thursday, January 24 2008, 04:27 pm

I guess it's just the mystery of friendship as to why Ron suffers Pete so thoroughly. And even if Ron did try to kick Pete out, Pete would just break back into the house and never go away. Like the Cable Guy.

As for What Not to Wear, I am actually OK with the show. Stacy is really mean at the beginning, but by the end, the people are either happy with her, so they either appreciate what's being done for them, or have developed Stockholm Syndrome. She's just playing the Bad Cop role, I guess. Anyway, more on this tomorrow.

Bullfrog -- Thursday, January 24 2008, 04:57 pm

Oh, and MJL, Pete is investigating for booze, but it's very often he steals drinks out of Ron's glass in the bars. I think he's probably done it around the house, too.
