Comic for Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

Posted: 8:00 am, Tuesday, January 22nd

Unsubtle subtle theater today. And the first panel is a hat tip to an old friend of mine who would always assure me that she didn't have oral herpes everytime she offered me a sip of her soda.

Every time Johnny Damon opens his mouth, I'm happier and happier that the mofo has found true happiness with the Goat Fuckers.

We saw There Will Be Blood over the weekend. Good flick, but not exactly what I thought it was going to be, and I'm not sure if I'm totally on board with all the praise it's been getting. I hear good things about No Country For Old Men, so I think that's next on the list. Unfortunately, it's not playing at our local, so if jury duty gets out early, I'm not guaranteed the matinee rate. Boooooo. Daniel Day-Lewis was, of course, incredible in Blood, though, and there was some really good stuff where his character and the local preacher went at each other. So it is highly recommended, just not the allegorical masterpiece I'd been expecting.

My parents won passes to go see Pope Benedict in the Pit of Hell this April from the Albany Diocese, and evidently this is the biggest damned thing to happen in Albany in years. A couple of newstations and a paper (I hear - I can't find the article anywhere) all did stories on my 'rents, who come off less completely insane and more like a slightly daffy old couple. Here they are on their Five Bucks video debut, my parents. Courtesy Channel 13 (where Mom tells the reporter it's OK he's not Catholic), and the nuttier version, courtesy Channel 9 (where their massive Christmas tree is featured, and where I get mentioned indirectly twice, for studying in Italy - I guess Notre Dame's not Catholic enough - and for apparently making my Mom's days quite long). I thought they were going to be on Channel 6, too, but I couldn't find them. Only an ugly couch photo contest. Albany is eggcelent!

Back to my civic duty today. I really hope this one day ends.

Pat, your martial law comment in the late evening yesterday - do you not see a certain not-my-president going gently into that good night?

The conspiracy theorist nut in my head, whom I try to supress, keeps telling me that he's going to declare war on Iran and use it as a guise to stay in office. Completely irrational, I know.

"There Will Be Blood" and "No Country for Old Men" got Best Picture nomination nods from the Oscar folks, along with "Juno", "Michael Crayton", and "Atonement." Weren't these just out in theatres in the past two weeks?

Of course, given how bad the Writer's Guild of America strike is, there may only be an announcement of the winners and not a grandiose show like in years past. I'm not sure that's necessarily a bad thing either.

CK -- Tuesday, January 22 2008, 09:39 am

The complete list of Oscar noms is here: http://a.oscar.go.com/media/2008/html/printer.html

I'm excited that "Falling Slowly" from "Once" is on the best original song list -- one of my favorite songs from last year. But "Juno" for Best Picture? It was cute enough, but feh.

Dan -- Tuesday, January 22 2008, 11:04 am

There was a lot of junk this year; it was not a good year for movies. My guess is that Atonement will win, because it was phenomenonally awful.

Bullfrog -- Tuesday, January 22 2008, 11:39 am

I think Juno should be in the best screenplay category, and I liked it, but I didn't really think it had a chance for best picture.

Skt and her fellow warned me away from Atonement with the one-word review, "shi-tay."

15 -- Tuesday, January 22 2008, 12:10 pm

I loved the book Atonement - I'm actually not going to watch the movie because I don't want it interfering with my image of the book.

Bullfrog -- Tuesday, January 22 2008, 12:20 pm

2.0 with the QC - I never remembered to fill in where the lip balm was from, in panel 2.

Miyaa -- Tuesday, January 22 2008, 12:24 pm

3.0 should be when Ron shoves the lip balm up Pete's ass...

crownover -- Tuesday, January 22 2008, 12:45 pm

atonement was AWFUL!!!! PS - I'm helping out with the pope's visit in april if anyone wants to join....
