Drive!

Posted: 7:00 am, Tuesday, July 24th

Kind of a fast-paced, frantic strip, and it looks as if my art was a little fast and loose in this one. I'm going to say that's to help emphasize the action in the strip, but, really, I was probably just being sloppy. The NYPD has a lot of union-ishes associated with it, by the way, so I'm not sure if the PBA is actually, like, the union of choice. I should've asked the cops at the bagel shop when I was getting my cold cuts today. (This counts as research, for me.)

We could be frighteningly close to t-shirts, just so you know. I finally sent out some requests for quotes from some printers, except I'm not sure if I submitted the comps correctly. We're either very close to having some merch here, or very close to having some printers tell me I'm too dumb to breathe, let alone sell t-shirts.

Cancer Boy made his triumphant return to the mound last night, in an AP story that quickly veers to the ridiculous. Speaking of the Sox, some think the boys have turned the corner - and it's kind of hard to disagree the last few days - and Beckett apparently has a MySpace page, or is a very easy read and someone has faked a MySpace page (shoot, that seems to be the case - I guess I should've posted this in the comments yesterday). Man, remember when I used to subject myself to finding an awful MySpace layout every day? That was brutal.

Man, Little Dee is great.

And, because I made fun of them last night in some private e-mails, I thought I'd mention that I have some friends who - and I'm not kidding - would very much like for Chicago to become a "Spice City". Apparently, the Spice Girls are putting on an international fan vote to designate one non-announced tour city a sure stop on their tour, and since Chicago's been overlooked for the coasts yet again, my friends are mobilizing. So if you agree with my friends, or if you want the Spice Girls to avoid your city like your city at all costs, drop on in here.

Oh, I didn't mean to take away the Harry comments, by the way.

Whitey -- Tuesday, July 24 2007, 09:38 am

God help me... I just voted for Chicago too...

Bullfrog -- Tuesday, July 24 2007, 09:41 am

The Irish just hauled in another badder-than-you LB. Corwin Brown hasn't coached a down yet and is already thirty times better than Nuclear Minter.

Wow, the guys at Baseball Prospectus, for some reason, have compared the KC Royals to the Harry Potter (pre-book 7) characters, with hilarious results.

My favorite is that Jason LaRue is Bellatrix.

(Note: 1% of the readership will understand this.)

KT -- Tuesday, July 24 2007, 10:35 am

Bullfrog, I must admit you were not very kind to your Midwestern friends last night (a realm where you spent three happy years of your life I might add).

When I told Bullfrog that the Spice Girls were for everyone, even those in the Midwest, he said:

"Actually, if you isolate the backing tracks to Spice Up Your Life, you can clearly hear that the refrain is actually "every boy and every girl (except those in the midwest), spice up your life/people of the world (except, again, those of you in the midwest), spice up your life!" It's very clear. I believe it was Sporty delivering the lines."

Like I told him: that is bad spice girls-ticket-karma right there.

Anyone else care to comment on Bullfrog's NY-centric view on reunited pop star gigs?

(Sorry, bullfrog - but you DID say that.)

Bullfrog -- Tuesday, July 24 2007, 10:48 am

I've been called out! My "NY-centric view on reunited pop star gigs" is on display for all to see! THE SHAME! THE SHAME!

I'll blame it on the Pumpkins ignoring NYC except for EarthAid or whatever on their reunion tour.

Miyaa -- Tuesday, July 24 2007, 11:06 am

Just curious: did they compare David Glass (owner of the Royals) to Voltamore?

KT -- Tuesday, July 24 2007, 11:09 am

I'm just not used to being the city that a band DOESN'T come to. Usually it's someone in Toronto going, "why doesn't indie band X ever come to our city?", and I think - that's why I live in Chicago because no band misses this city. Until now. Unless we vote in force.

Bullfrog -- Tuesday, July 24 2007, 11:10 am

Actually, no one drew the Voldemort comparison. But Glass didn't get listed, so I'm assuming it was him. Maybe it's Bonds, though.

Bullfrog -- Tuesday, July 24 2007, 12:18 pm

I haven't watched this yet, and I know nothing about the film, and honestly very little about Jane Austen. But because I know she's got a fan in the room, there's evidently a flick coming about about Jane Austen. Here is the trailer:

I was in traffic court this morning (prosecuting) and an officer was telling me the facts of the case. At the end of the traffic stop, the guy handed him a PBA card. The officer didn't seem thrilled. I only mention it because it happen THIS MORNING and this strip is so timely.

Bullfrog -- Tuesday, July 24 2007, 12:41 pm

Ah, Pete buttered the guy up by chatting with him amicably for a few minutes yesterday - they were already sharing donuts by the time Ron was running off.

e -- Tuesday, July 24 2007, 12:58 pm

I am sure your NYPD are different than the VSP. :-) Beside, Pete is clearly a charming guy.

tree -- Tuesday, July 24 2007, 01:16 pm

Keep in mind, bullfrog, KT has kept every email ever written to or by her.

This was displayed to great effect at a recent wedding, and caused myself (and many others, I assume) to shudder in fear.

Bullfrog -- Tuesday, July 24 2007, 01:40 pm

As did I, until IT made me get rid of them. I lost 45,000 sent and 38,000 received e-mails in a single dark day.

KT -- Tuesday, July 24 2007, 02:00 pm

To demonstrate that tree is, indeed, correct - I just forwarded him some emails he sent me back in 2001 detailing how he used to score chicks in bars. So yeah.

Bullfrog - I don't have any blackmail-worthy emails from you, but I do have a heck of a lot of pictures from Rome when we were all going through questionable wardrobe phases.

KT -- Tuesday, July 24 2007, 02:01 pm

Oh wait - that last post was from me, not tree. Sorry for confusion - Bullfrog, can you fix that?

Bullfrog -- Tuesday, July 24 2007, 02:01 pm

I think my entire life has been a questionable wardrobe phase, KT. (Who is posing as tree, evidently.)

Bullfrog -- Tuesday, July 24 2007, 02:02 pm

Fixed!

KT -- Tuesday, July 24 2007, 02:15 pm

Oh yeah, and there was that one banquet when you experimented with cross-dressing...

Bullfrog -- Tuesday, July 24 2007, 02:18 pm

I looked fucking fetching in that dress.

Bullfrog -- Tuesday, July 24 2007, 02:49 pm

My favorite regional ad I've heard over MLB radio so far: The Tigers station just ran a Faygo ad. Awesome.

CK -- Tuesday, July 24 2007, 03:09 pm

I am very torn about the "Becoming Jane" movie. I know I will hate it, because their facts are all screwed up and it stars my nemesis Anne Hathaway, queen of the glib scene-killing smirk; but on the other hand, perhaps it would be fun to go see it and actively hate it, rather than hating it from an uninformed distance? But on the other other hand, that would mean giving the movie (and la Hathaway) money.

CK -- Tuesday, July 24 2007, 03:10 pm

P.S. Just noticed the book the dispatcher is reading -- love it!

Bullfrog -- Tuesday, July 24 2007, 03:18 pm

Solution to your problem: Buy a ticket to a movie you *do* want to support, go to Becoming Jane, instead.
