Comic for Monday, October 30th, 2006

Time constraints kind of bit me in the ass on this one.

Posted: 7:41 am, Monday, October 30th

This is one of those strips that when I put together Five Bucks to Friday: The Strip: The Book, it'll be completely redone. I thought I could use a watercolor filter on the background of Jen's panel, but I would've had to go through Photoshop and insert it and all sorts of stuff that I just ran out of time for. Not enough time to draw last week - people kept taking me out to lunch and I kept having plans in the evening. It's a shame.

So, I thought I'd have time to write a whole bunch for today, but not so much. It took us a whopping five hours and forty minutes to get home from Baltimore yesterday, thanks largely in part to Delaware. It took us over an hour to go two and a half miles in Delaware for what appeared to be no clear reason (I think a lane was closed for construction that was not taking place, or something). To this, I say: Fuck you, Delaware. You have made an enemy today. "The First State"? Try "The Worst State," boy-os. That's right, I said it. You've been served, Delaware. (I reserve almost as much hatred for Exit 13 off the turnpike, which has the worst highway engineering I've ever seen, constricting everyone who wants to get on the Goethals down to two lanes from ten tollbooths.)

This is not to say that the trip to Baltimore was not outstanding. Good friends, good brats, good football. The team looked solid, and really buckled down in the second half on defense, which is always fun. I would've liked to see Demetrius Jones in at QB a bit in garbage time, but what can you do? I do not particularly understand what the pollsters saw in our play that allowed California to jump us, or what about Auburn's six-point victory against the Orgeron kept them from falling, but this will all take care of itself. We don't have a realistic shot at the title game, and nothing's going to keep us out of the BCS if we beat USC, so it really makes no difference. I know we were "supposed to" root for USC so that we could beat the undefeated #2 team in the country over Thanksgiving weekend, but, God, it's fun to see them lose. Suckers.

We also stopped by the American Visionary Arts Museum yesterday (instead of driving home a few hours after the game). Those of you who live down in DC, go catch an O's game sometime next year and swing by this place afterwards. Highly recommended. It's a lot of outsider art/art by completely insane people. The Home & Beast exhibit right now is sweet. Unfortunately, their website seems to be a little non-working when it comes to Home & Beast. Oh well. It's about the damage we as humans are doing to the world, and has these really sweet tar-on-brown-paper paintings from this guy's mom, and another series of paintings that are in kind of a religious motif (Christ figures, arched canvases) with apes in the place of the people (Eve After the Fall is outstanding). Highly recommended, the whole thing.

Did I have something else? Oh, yes - I Love Clay Aiken is rolling through the Worst Fantasy League Ever with the fury of a thousand wronged souls. After demolishing one of my work buddies yesterday (without my QB even playing yet), I am on a six-game win streak and gaining steam every week. America: Fuck yeah.

Oh, and, duh, congrats to the Cards. I hope 15 survived the weekend.

I echo your sentiments regarding the "Worst State." I was attacked unprovoked by the construction on Friday and will never forget it. Never forget!

Man, winning the world series rocks. I can't believe I get to smile about this all winter!

15 -- Monday, October 30 2006, 09:23 am

Oops! WRONG NUMBER - I just saluted Mark McGwire instead of my Jedmonds...

Bullfrog -- Monday, October 30 2006, 10:31 am

That's some bad karma headed into the postseason, dude.

15 -- Monday, October 30 2006, 11:49 am

Eh. I understand Mark McGwire is a big fat juiced junkie cheat and all, but he really did do a lot for baseball in St. Louis. I mean, his (admittedly fake, but we didn't know that then) appeal brought back the crowds after the strike, and the crowds he brought back meant that we could afford to pay stars like Jim Edmonds, Scott Rolen and Albert Pujols, despite the fact that st. louis is in the bottom 10 of major league baseball market sizes.

Granted, the cardinals would probably have regained their popularity eventually even without him, but I really do think he sped up the process a lot.

60 minutes had a story on Charlie Weis last night - very interesting, and a dif side of him. You can see it at: http://60minutes.yahoo.com/ Go Irish!

The coolest thing about the Cardinals winning the World Series? Hearing Bud Selig botch Eckstein's name. Oi vey! Now I understand the whole "That's FrankenSTEIN!" running gag from the whole Young Frankenstein movie.

For the record, the best seat on the subway is Lissa's perpendicular seat while facing across from a hot chick, a la Pete.

Whoops, I think I meant Ron's. Anyway yeah, those ones that face towards each other right next to the door.
