Comic for Thursday, October 26th, 2006

Switch. To Five Bucks to Friday! I should've made the background white in one panel. Oh well.

Posted: 7:41 am, Thursday, October 26th

Am I wrong for liking those Mac/PC ads? I can't help it, they kind of amuse me. They don't actually make me want to purchase either a Mac or a PC, but they're not fucking faux-documentary ads, which is really all I ask for. Don't show me a hipster supposedly making a movie about Verizon high-speed DSL or his fucking Nissan. That's all I ask.

Also, a pony.

I have a friend who bought a juice press so that he could make his own wheatgrass juice. Frankly, that sounds horrible to me. I'd say Grampa's assessment of 'unwashed badger' sounds pretty accurate.

Horror films for both left wingers and right wingers, courtesy the AV Club. I'd say my affinity for slasher flicks is probably the most right-wing thing about me.

Only Gary Sheffield could be upset at getting a $13 million option picked up. What a dick.

Congrats to the Dirty Jerz, for taking a step into modern times! On the news bit I saw on this yesterday, they cut to the leader of some group in Jersey that had the word 'family' in it, so you know it was just some stupid organization trying to encourage homophobia, and the guy said that they're already planning how to oppose this. It was hilarious, the dude was this little Jerry Reinsdorf-looking toady guy, and he did a little heel-raise at the end of it, like Harpo Marx did in conjunction with raising his eyebrows or something. Good times.

LOST alert: What the hell was Desmond doing?

bullfrog

Reggie Ho -- Thursday, October 26 2006, 08:44 am

LOST alert: Reggie is full of comments this morning. First of all, Desmond was trying to protect the baby because he can see the future. So, he knew lightning was going to strike the tent with the whole in it. As a result, he built that lightning rod. Second, that was the best Lost episode of the season. Totally bad ass. Absolutely shocking ending (I never would have guessed). If only they could cut down on the violence a bit. Third, I think Sawyer is the one with the tumor, not Benjamin. Too obvious from the preview if it were Benjamin. Fourth, regardless of the rightness/wrongness of the Dirty Jerz Court's decision, one thing is for certain, the Court really failed to commit to anything. No more comments on the Court though since there's not enough room on this webpage for it. Fifth, my mom got me the ND-Navy game shirt and it has some logo about "Tradition," not "Ghosts vs. Goats" (whatever the hell that means). Sixth, 51 hours and 16 minutes until kickoff.

Bullfrog -- Thursday, October 26 2006, 09:21 am

LOST: Good call. I forgot Desmond can see the future. Also, I liked the ending because it finally put 2.0's peninsula theory to bed.

Pat -- Thursday, October 26 2006, 10:52 am

Yup, good Lost episode. And Desmond can definitely see the future, but I was wondering what the roof has to do with the future. Also, is this like a Terminator future, where he can see the future and edit it, but it doesn't cause him to disappear and shit like in Back to the Future?

You are weird for liking those Mac-PC ads. I just want to punch that fucking hipster in his smug fucking face every time I see it (which is rude, because that guy is actually a funny actor other than in the ads). Like the dude from Slate's ad report card wrote, they got the stereotype of the Mac user so perfectly, including the unjustified superiority complex. Mac users are the same people who love to make you feel dumb because you don't know their favorite ultra-obscure band.

Bullfrog -- Thursday, October 26 2006, 11:12 am

The Ho nailed it on the head - it wasn't so much the roof actually had a problem, he was just trying to get Claire to move down the beach so she didn't get struck by lightning. I totally missed that. I thought Desmond had some weird weather-controlling powers.

I think I missed the first go-round of the Mac/PC ads, which I heard were really obnoxious - the only two I've really seen much are the ones with the Swedish model as the movie he made on his Mac, and the one where the PC crawls into the fetal position. For what it's worth, I think the PC guy actually makes those ads (he was the emcee at the McSweeney's thing I saw a few months back, too, but since I hadn't paid attention to any of the Mac/PC ads yet, so I had no idea why he kept referencing Macs).

And I hope my constant mentioning of the Hold Steady isn't coming off as me trying to make anyone who doesn't know them feel dumb.

I don't know if those of you outside the DC Metro area have heard, but certain Virginians are trying to increase local intolerance of gay marriage. It is already legislated that marriage is between a man and a woman. However, that is apparently not enough. The proposed amendment would prevent ALL civil unions and domestic partnerships.

So for those of you voting in VA or might know people who are, here is a website the has the proposed text and discusses the ramifications of the amendment: http://www.votenova.org/

Reggie Ho -- Thursday, October 26 2006, 11:59 am

Please do not call me "Ho." I prefer Mr. Ho or Reggie Ho. Thanks in advance.

Bullfrog -- Thursday, October 26 2006, 12:12 pm

This is on Deadspin, but it's too priceless to not post again. It's about the universal "Guy who cares too much" at intramural sports, except it's a whole team. And it's flag freaking football.

http://www.armchairgm.com/mwiki/index.php?title=Armchair_Idiots:_Intramurals

Miyaa -- Thursday, October 26 2006, 12:45 pm

Yeah, nothing says like big-time campus like greek intramurals. At MU they even developed something like a Sears trophy for the group that does the best in all of the intramural activities. They even have a college football pick 'em "intramural competition." During the basketball season: bracketmania.

It's as odd as the time I was at the Missouri Boys State, and they determined the best county and city group through mostly athletic events, such as horseshoes. (My city came in 2nd, missed winning by one point. Did get top county honors, have a patch to show for it.)

As another comic strip has pointed out, the reason why Macs aren't hacked as often as PCs is because, well no one cares about Macs, unless we're talking about hacking an iPod. (Lesson to Apple: Never say or boast that you have "foolproof" anything. Then not only will your I-Pod be hacked, but your microwaves and the coffee dispenser that Steve Jobs likes to use most for his coffee. Heck, they may even hack his car.)

The guy who plays the Mac computer is a comedian living in New York, I believe.

Speaking of hacking, there was a story where supposedly, Muslium extremists wanted to hack into the Vatican's computers and mess it completely up, but they were thwarted by the Vatican's firewall server, affectionately known as Michael. As in St. Michael.

So I ask you, which person deserves a lower level of hell: the typical chaotic minded hacker or the guy that sends out two billion spammed emails a year?

MJL -- Thursday, October 26 2006, 01:25 pm

Wow. Just had some onion rings for the first time in a while. Now asking self: Why have you stayed away for so long?

Expecting Bullfrog to use his Dante affection to substantiate placement of spammer vs. hacker in appropriate circle of hell.

Co-worker, about to leave the company, is of the mostly benevolent hacker variety. For whatever reason, he felt compelled to entrust me with his HP printer hack, so now I can change the message in the little window on our network printers. Instead of "Toner Low", for example, I could go with "Your shoe is untied".

Uhhh, I guess I wanna cookie for that or something. I'm not sure where to go now that I'm armed with such awesome powers.

e -- Thursday, October 26 2006, 01:29 pm

Here's a little Lost article from today's Wash. Post: http://blog.washingtonpost.com/celebritology/2006/10/lost_episode_4_dueling_analyse_1.html#more

Bullfrog -- Thursday, October 26 2006, 01:52 pm

I'd say change it to "Go Irish," but that would pretty effectively limit the suspects.

I would think Spammers - of the Nigerian prince variety - would go into the eighth circle with the fraudulent. Same for the Cialis sort, too. I'm thinking the eighth pocket, with the fraudlent counselors?

Chaotic hackers, I think that can be considered violence toward others. Those'd be the credit hackers - the ones that just like to take down msnbc.com or some crap for no clear reason are probably more accurately considered just 'wrathful,' and therefore belong in the fifth circle.

e -- Thursday, October 26 2006, 01:55 pm

what about the porn sites? In swirling with the lustful?

Bullfrog -- Thursday, October 26 2006, 02:05 pm

You'd have to imagine, no?

CK -- Thursday, October 26 2006, 03:58 pm

Miyaa, when did you go to Missouri Boys State? And what high school did you attend? I was at MO Girls State in 1995, from Raymore-Peculiar.

Miyaa -- Thursday, October 26 2006, 04:58 pm

1993, from Savannah, Missouri.

And by the way, I totally envied Girls State. Not only did they do things sensibly for the girls, they had better looking t-shirts to boot. Mine went from bad off-white to rags in about a matter of hours after I wore it.

I was known as "Shooter" at Boys State because of my ability to mimic the sound of loading an AK-47 rifle, which the fellow staters thought was awfully funny. Our keynote speaker: Al "Mad Dog" Hrabosky long before he became a staple of Fox Sports Midwest Cardinal telecasts. He got into it with an Cincinnati Reds fan after his speech, and I pretty much have very little respect for him since then.

It was one of a litany of interesting incidents that happened throughout my childhood, many at far exotic locations like Malibu Beach, CA and Chicago, IL. I love Chicago.

Miyaa -- Friday, October 27 2006, 01:12 am

One win away! Woo. (And don't you dare tell me you didn't see this happening, 15.)
