Comic for Friday, September 29th, 2006

Yeah, yeah, a continuity flaw.

Posted: 7:40 am, Friday, September 29th

I realize there's a continuity flaw, here - the boys are basically carrying on exactly as they were last week, which isn't so bad, except that they've been seen in different clothing since then. I actually caught this in time to fix it, but I figured that it makes more sense for all of this be going on during the same evening, and for Monday's victory dance to be kind of outside of the continuity of this particular little arc.

Speaking of the arc! Honestly, I do know where this is all going, and it's going to get there sooner rather than later, I think.

I’ve never ready Robinson Crusoe, so I don’t know if these three books do combine into a literary Triforce that does actually let you conquer the world. Anyone get all three?

This was kind of a charming look behind the NY Times obit pages.

Speaking of the NY Times obit pages, this would've been what I ran if I had say on 9/11. That alone.

Holy shit, Manny's wife has a kind-of blog.

There would be more, except my company softball award banquet was last night, and I'm double-plus hungover.

Grafe -- Friday, September 29 2006, 08:04 am

I've read 3/4 of Moby Dick, 1/2 of Robinson Crusoe, and all of Treasure Island. Can I get 1/2 a gold star to stick on my fridge?

Bullfrog -- Friday, September 29 2006, 08:47 am

The closest I can come to that is all of Moby-Dick, I've watched Muppets Treasure Island, and I've read the Moonstone, which has a character who's always quoting Robinson Crusoe.

Bullfrog -- Friday, September 29 2006, 08:54 am

Geez, I forgot it's Friday. OK, two Irish highlights real quick for you - one is Montana's coming-out party against Purdue back in '77.

And the second is the first play I ever saw in Notre Dame stadium, Allen Rossum's kickoff return against Purdue from my freshman year. We won that game 35-0, and I never, ever, ever thought that the rest of my football-watching career as a student would be so lackluster.

Go Irish! Beat Boilermakers!

Pat -- Friday, September 29 2006, 09:25 am

I've read all three, yet I'm still sitting here in my DC studio apartment following the travails of your arc.

I think I must have skipped a chapter in Treasure Island that was somehow crucial during the "world emperor" ascendancy phase.

Wood -- Friday, September 29 2006, 09:38 am

Wouldnt it be beat the boilermakers? Regardless I havent read treasure island but I have read the other two. If I believed that you conquer the world through boredom I would believe you could conquer the world through these books. The Tome that is Moby Dick was the basis for my failed whaling career, although I sense I failed more to nautical weakness than knowledge of whaling (and knots). I thought this was interesting enough to post because i only care what b-list celebrities say about politics.

Bullfrog -- Friday, September 29 2006, 09:43 am

It would be, but it's part of a cheer done at the stadium, and it's tough enough to squeeze the four syllables of Boilermakers into the cadence.

I guess if you were trying to conquer the world through bludgeoning everyone, Moby-Dick would be a good place to start. I'd upgrade to a mace or something rather quickly, though.

Weird Al's White and Nerdy video has the most unexpectedly robust wikipedia page ever.

Ondy -- Friday, September 29 2006, 11:08 am

Robinson Crusoe is very good, but my favorite deserted island novel is "The Mysterious Island" by Jules Verne. Anyone read it?

Pat -- Friday, September 29 2006, 11:52 am

As a comic writer yourself, you'll appreciate how this shit is sick, but hilarious:

Next time they live. That's fantastic.

Zero -- Friday, September 29 2006, 12:56 pm

okay, not to be a snotty English major or anything, but couldn't Oklahoma come up with a better slogan for their literacy campaign than this? http://www.readyall.com/

I weep for the future. Also for MSU football.

That's too fucking awesome, Zero. Nice find.

I would argue that "y'all" is a great gender-neutral pronoun that could replace "guys." It also just sounds so friendly.

Though I did catch myself saying "all y'all" yesterday... I briefly mourned for my previous command of the language.

Whitey -- Friday, September 29 2006, 02:19 pm

At home today, but wanted to make sure I got my GO IRISH post in. Feeling strangely confident about tomorrow, which HAS to be due to Purdue's Betty Crocker early schedule.

I'm hoping for a Penn St. like game. My esophogeal lining can't take much more like MI squared.

Wood -- Friday, September 29 2006, 02:38 pm

ad - I have also caught myself using all y'all now that I live south of the dotted dixon line. This makes my boss happy because I am "blending" but he gets pissed because it always turns into "all y'all motherfuckers better or i will "

Wood -- Friday, September 29 2006, 02:39 pm

It removed my joke "all y'all motherfuckers better [insert requested action] or i will [insert threat of violence or embarrassment]"

ad -- Friday, September 29 2006, 03:27 pm

Boo computers with missing funny bones. But thanks for the support, Wood. Nice to know I'm not the only one.

Bullfrog -- Friday, September 29 2006, 03:39 pm

I used "y'all" for a while early in freshman year.. We had a bunch of Southerners in our hallway and I kind of ape the accent of people I'm speaking to. It *is* usefull. But, "Read, Y'all!" is still classically hilarious.

Bullfrog -- Friday, September 29 2006, 04:29 pm

I went as Wolverine for Halloween a few years back. I made the claws out of letter openers that I kind of taped together - they were pretty good. This guy, though, went nuts with it.

Bullfrog -- Friday, September 29 2006, 05:02 pm

Alright, I'm out. And because I just remembered that Purdue was the team that this highlight was from, for about the third time, here is Ray Zellars just eating some guy's lunch.
