Comic for Thursday, July 27th, 2006

All problems that a friend of mine had right before her wedding.

Posted: 7:24 am, Thursday, July 27th

So, I'm headed upstate after my softball game tonight to visit the parents and party with a friend of 2.0's. As my parents live in the 19th century, I will be completely, 100% out of touch tomorrow. Honest - they still have dial-up and are up in the woods, so my cell phone doesn't even work. It's like I'm becoming Amish for the day. I'm even going to be chopping wood and helping my dad build a stone wall. (We already have a barn, so I needn't raise one.) What does all this mean for you, the viewer? That tomorrow's comic will be going up at about eight thirty tonight, and that the blog will likely be a bit on the weak side. And that you'll all have to provide the chatter in the comments tomorrow.

Uni Watch had an awesome bit yesterday that was just basically a transcription of the top of the fourth of a Mets game the other night. I'd almost rather television broadcasters just talk like this for the entire game than describe to me what I can damn well see myself. Radio is a bit different, of course. Speaking of radio, in case you checked in early yesterday, reader Zero made a drinking game out of the always-objectionable John Sterling. Douchebag extraordinaire Michael Kay is up next. Which brings me to a somewhat-related point: I think it's Trupiano, but one of the guys on EEI is driving me nuts lately. The Sox were out in Oakland this past week, and Trupiano made a big deal out of how he stays as far away from Haight-Ashbury as possible, and then went on to mock the sausage race in Milwaukee. Look, man, Haight-Ashbury's got a Gap on one corner and a Ben and Jerry's on another, and it's totally commercialized. No acid-freak hippie is going to kidnap you in their sin bin or whatever you're afraid of. And the sausage race is damned awesome. I had much more specific and far-ranging complaints, but you've got to understand, these games didn't start 'til ten most of the week. I'm lucky if I remember my name by that point.

My solution to ten o'clock starts? A whole mess of coffee. Turns out I'm fighting diabetes in addition to appearing to give a shit about my job performance. Coffee: Fuck yeah!

Penny-Arcade has been on fire lately - the strip comes and goes in spurts, I feel, and it's been riding a hot streak for the past few months that's better than most strips have in their lifespan. Man, those guys are good.

This is the most pessimistic tOSU preview I've seen so far. So, the other night, I had this dream where it was the first game of the season for the Irish and I was watching from the pressbox of the stadium (we were home). Only thing was, we were playing Navy and it was August 25th (we open at Georgia Tech on the 2nd). Also, it was snowing, and the pressbox was cluttered like an old garage, with junk everywhere. The Irish were down 10-3, despite the fact I saw Darius score a touchdown on a screen pass. All in all, a strange dream, but one I enjoyed greatly. I think you could say I'm ready for football season.

Two clips from Crooks and Liars for your viewing pleasure - Colbert notes that a lot of people the Christian Coalition gives A's to wind up indicted for one thing or another, and Stewart has McCain on. I've really soured on McCain in the past few years. This interview, he plays along with Stewart, but, still, he's showing no integrity. Look, I don't care what your political view is, when your colleague - who is an elected official - says that the internet is a series of tubes and you actually have a functioning cerebral cortex, it is your fucking duty to say, "No, man, actually, that's 100% wrong and you need to take out a For Dummies book." (Sidebar: Shit, I wish I had thought of sending that guy a For Dummies book back when that bit of news was current.)

Anyone going to be in New Rochelle tonight? Because the MySpace nightmare is having a birthday party up that way tonight, if her screen name is accurate. That one was mostly selected for the music. Oi.

Alright, I'm out. New strip up tonight, and if you're not doing anything in New York around four, I recommend getting in line for the Hold Steady's free show. Seriously, they rule.

An interesting Threadless t-shirt choice for a wedding...

Bullfrog -- Thursday, July 27 2006, 09:41 am

Flowers in the Attic has quickly become one of my alltime favorite t-shirts.

That was one of the things I meant to bitch about re: Trupiano. He made a big deal over how he didn't know what a chorizo is. Dude, that's not funny. It's just kind of sad. And then he made fun of Castiglione for googling it to get an exact defintion. Trup is quickly cementing a Joe Morgan-like status of computerphobe in my mind.

For all you NYC-ers out there (esp the ones in BRKLN), this may be of interest:

We thought you'd like to know that The Netflix Rolling Roadshow is coming to the New York area. Netflix will be presenting a free outdoor screening of the classic The Warriors on Coney Island, a location the movie helped make famous.

Date: Wednesday, August 2 Time: 8:30 PM Address: Asser Levy Park Amphitheater Between Sea Breeze and Ocean at 2nd Street, Coney Island, NY

Who knows - maybe I will even leave the ISLAND for this!!!

Miyaa -- Thursday, July 27 2006, 10:00 am

I'm pretty much convinced that if I ever do get married, it's going to be one of those deals where it's either going to be in Vegas or some tropical island and just the two of us and the minister. I don't want my parents involved, and I don't want her parents involved. They're ¾ of the reason why Bridezilla shows are such the train wreck that they are.

And if I were Lissa, I'd up-smack her little sister. Didn't I teach you anything?

Bullfrog -- Thursday, July 27 2006, 10:07 am

I think a luau is the way to go. Mmmm, pig roast.

Man, I am bummed about the timing on that Warriors showing. I've got tix to Sleater-Kinney's final New York show happening at the same durned time.

Although - "a location the movie helped make famous"? Whoever wrote that copy is taking some *serious* creative licensing. My head tingle. (Not quite asplode.)

Altho anyone who knows me (my family) will disagree - I plan to elope to Vegas and be married by Elvis. Perhaps at the Drive-Thru Chapel of Love. Now to find the guy...

So disappointing....apparently the American guy who won the Tour de France may have been doped up! http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/27/sports/othersports/27cnd-doping.html?hp&ex=1154059200&en=f616263b07608f96&ei=5094&partner=homepage
