Comic for Friday, July 21st, 2006

Lissa can do it all, including nothing at all.

Posted: 7:10 am, Friday, July 21st

Odd ending to the week, I know. Just to make sure no one gets the wrong idea, I'm not putting forth that there's anything wrong with getting as much action as you can (safely, of course) or that there's some dumb double standard where girls that have a lot of partners are, you know, biohazards or anything. This whole week was more or less based off the adventures of one of 2.0's old roommates, who evidently had the ability to bring fellas home and not get it on with them, and somehow this worked. I thought that was hilarious. So that's all this is today. Just to get that all out there.

Some crazy stuff from Harper's - evidently there are bulletin boards for people getting psyched about the rapture, and, boy, are they excited about the shit goin' down over in the Middle East. I find that outlook to be a bit, well, straight-out sick. Wanting the second coming is all well and good - we could use a fella like Jesus again with all the nonsense going on down here - but rooting for bloody armagaeddon in someone else's backyard because you think that's going to bring it about, well, geez. That's not Christian. (Incidentally, we also had at my office yesterday a woman who was all psyched up about the prospect of a global flu pandemic because it's good for business. How sick in the head is that?) Also from Harper's, here's what's happened in the last week (well, the last week a few days ago). I love the way Harper's sums things up with totally unrelated sentences. That's hilarious.

Pajiba's weekly trade roundup is basically a must-read. There's a Kavalier and Clay movie on the way? Wow. And a flick set in Rochester? I wonder if it's NY or Minnesota. Anyway, good times.

Reggie Ho sent me this article about Troy Murphy coaching the Newark Bears this evening. If you've got nothing else to do, go root for the Irish in Newark tonight, I guess. You get this crazy bobblehead-ish.

Anyone in Pittsburgh have no plans on Sunday? My friend Jan is having an opening at Tai + Lee Gallery.

I actually kind of like the Snickers ads that appeared everywhere overnight in New York. I find the word nougat to be incredibly hilarious, though, so it could be partially that. I had a Penny-Arcade comic I wanted to link to here, but I'm having a helluva time finding it. Shoot. That kind of ruined my segue. Oh well.

I'll talk about more stupid ads, instead. Ford, take your Goddamn American Idol ads and cram them somewhere in your anatomy that is small, where they will cause immense discomfort. My God, if I ever see or hear Tyler Hicks again, it may destroy my brain. Also stupid: That one Geico radio spot where the guy talks about how great the internet is and then goes on some weird side tangent, “Blogging. Boy, do I love blogging. Maybe *too* much. When I think about all the time I’ve spent blogging… Well!” What the hell is that?

The only way this post could be better is if it were one day instead of 44. But now it's 43. So that's marginally better. Good times! Sweet Q&A with Samardzija over in CNNSI, too - a longer version of what's in the magazine. How good is Sammy? He's earned the right to no longer be referred to as Samadklajfd;ljsa. *That* good. Fear the Eastern European athlete.

My bagel shop made it into the Times today, but it's less about bagels and more about the unfiltered water system in New York City.

We've got a classic MySpace abomination for today. I'd say this about a fifteen percent transparency setting with dark purple text on a black background, you've got about five audios loading up all at once, including Duck Hunt (which is actually pretty cool), and there's some bizarre butterfly woman in the background.

You mean Duck Hunt, one of the first NES video games? (Darn that snickering dog!)

Three things I know has to be true about Taylor Hicks:

1. He has to be older than 25. 2. He either looks like Jay Leno's evil twin brother or that ESPN reporter, Pedro Gomez. 3. This is why Ford is sinking like the Titantic: they can't help but make bad decisions like this.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go purchase tickets to the new Clerks II movie.

That Harper's thing creeped me the hell out. Why do these evangelical freaks conveniently forget the whole "watch therefore, and be prepared, for you know neither the day nor the hour" part of the Bible? I'm glad the Catholic Church discourages this kind of disgusting speculation. Pharisees, I tells ya!

I love the idea of people who are in jail doing something useful instead of just sitting around all day... http://money.cnn.com/2006/07/21/news/international/italian_convicts.reut/index.htm

That is also common practice here in the US, unless I'm mistaken. Though I don't know how I feel about thieves and murderers having access to my address and phone number. (I have no worries about non-violent offenders.)

The federal pen in Angola, LA, is staggering in what it finds for the prisoners to do. http://www.newsday.com/sports/ny-pris2-side1,0,2969588.story

MNP -- Friday, July 21 2006, 01:00 pm

yeah, but they have access to your address & phone number if it's listed anyhow. Although the idea of talking to a murderer on the phone did jar me a bit.

It's amazing how little i know about the pentitary system in the US (ie: nothing).

At least the current spammers that are hitting the site are complimenting me before I delete them.

Miyaa -- Friday, July 21 2006, 04:45 pm

Love google's mail function. Love it. My only complaint is in the spam section they put up spam recipes (or at least the link to one). I mean the last thing I really want to see is a recipe for spam mac and cheese.

You should hook up the WordPress. It's got this plugin called Akismet that's the shit at blocking comment spam. Highly recommended.
