Note that Ron actually changed his pants to go out - definite evidence that Ron is not me.

Posted: 6:50 am, Wednesday, May 24th

So, last night, I installed a ceiling fan for Crownover. I have created wind and electricity! Bow before me, Tiamat, Fiend of Wind! Honestly, I can't believe I didn't kill myself. Or her. Or burn her entire building to the ground. Note to everyone out there: You want to ask almost anyone else you know to install a ceiling fan for you before you come to me.

Excellent article on why Barry is not Babe, without even factoring in steroids. Also really makes you wonder what the hell ESPN’s SportsCentury thing was doing when it didn’t name the Babe the greatest athlete of the century. The only possible alternative was Ali, who also didn’t finish first.

McSweeney's was pretty sweet yesterday. 2.0 and I got a subscription to the Quarterly, but because it comes in all strange shapes and sizes, they couldn't fit it through the door and we didn't get to the post office to pick it up in time, so they sent it back. We're about ten blocks from the Superhero Store, so we're hoping we can just be allowed to go pick it up from there.

This next item marks a pretty big departure for not just this site, but another. A) I'm actually being timely for a change. B) Retrocrush is being more or less serious. Somehow, Retrocrush got to interview Al Gore about his movie, an Inconvenient Truth, which both sounds excellent and opens today (and has a pretty slick site - 2.0 says this is because he invented the internet). (sound) Normally, I'd exhort you to find a theater today to go see it, but, dude, Lost finale tonight. See it tomorrow.

Today's MySpace nightmare comes to us from RAW, and is not a horrible .html abortion like usual. Nope, this centers on the freak-ass pictures people sometimes post on their profiles. Note that this guy is just called Erik and not *M/-\n +!+$" like you'd expect or something.

Great Bonds article... Another fantastic article on Bonds from ESPN is about how many Bonds would have hit if he hadn't taken steroids...

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?pag e=hruby/060512

Fascinating and probably pretty accurate...

Grafe -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 08:30 am

So, how does one install a ceiling fan?

Bullfrog -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 08:56 am

Very slowly. And make sure to turn the circuit off before starting, or you get some pretty cool sparks.

crownover -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 09:08 am

you only blew the fuse twice... it's wasn't *that* bad.. hehhe

Bullfrog -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 09:26 am

Norm Abrams can rest easy knowing I'm out there.

2.0 -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 09:41 am

I am happy to report that my personal CO2 impact is 6,000 pounds per year (according to Al's site) where the average is 15,000.

Bullfrog -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 09:46 am

Mine comes in somewhere between 7,500 and 9,200. I did kind of a low- and high-end estimate of driving and flying each.

2.0 -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 09:58 am

Yeah I didn't calculate passenger travel in the car. I figure I drive no more than 3 times a year, and that's usually between my parents house and Rochester (30 miles one way I believe).

2.0 -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 09:58 am

We need to recycle more paper though.

ad -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 10:00 am

8300 lb/yr

Though I'm sure it is figuring high because in TX one is expected to run the AC at 73 degrees all summer and my default is 80. Also, if I sign up for the wind-generated electricity, I go down to 5300--gotta do that!

Princess Di -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 10:29 am

Happy Fleet Week!!!

Bullfrog -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 10:44 am

ad - see, I think ours may be a little less because we don't use AC and the electric bills are inflated by the market we live in. But, wow, a 3,000 pound drop. That's pretty good for living somewhere you need to drive.

Ah, yes, Fleet Week. It's probably happening between panels, but you can rest assured Pete is breaking out the sailor's outfit again this year.

I take the bus to work/school and rarely drive more than a few miles for groceries, etc. Central Austin is amazingly good for bus, bike, feet transportation. The sub/ex-urbs are another story entirely.

Grafe -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 10:52 am

apparently i am the cause of global warming.

Bullfrog -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 11:02 am

Nice work, jerk.

MNP -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 11:10 am

I'm with ya, Grafe. I blame it on Charlotte's lack of public transportation.

Grafe -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 11:40 am

apparently, you are not supposed to both own a car and fly in a plane.

crownover -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 12:10 pm

4600... go me! guess it helps that i haven't driven a car in at least 5 years...

MNP -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 12:11 pm

you know you want a Luther...bacon cheeseburger on a krispy kreme...could you invent anything w/ more calories & fat??? http://www.sun-sentinel.com/features/health/di et/sfl-522southern,0,2320581.story

Bullfrog -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 12:14 pm

Best bit from that column:

The South was labeled "the Stroke Belt" because 11 states and the District of Columbia, from Washington to Florida and west to Texas, have the highest incidence of and mortality from stroke in nation, according to Dr. Mark Alberts, a professor of neurology at Northwestern University Medical School.

The Stroke Belt, that's hilarious. (edited - clearly, I didn't mean the 'Stoke Belt,' that's something else entirely. I'm retarded.)

MNP -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 12:37 pm

I like the guy at the end who tries to eat healthy, but goes to the diner when he "falls off the wagon" - 3 or 4 times a WEEK.

E -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 01:02 pm

Turns out that commuting 40 miles/day and flying 6-8 round trips a year really adds up. Do I not go to South Bend this year to save the environment?

Grafe -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 01:05 pm

No, that would be silly.

Quit your job.

Bullfrog -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 01:41 pm

Jeff Samardzija gets an article on the front page of mlb.com - I find this hilarious for some reason.

MJL -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 01:42 pm

I drive my pregnant wife to the train station. I guess I should make her walk.

E -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 01:56 pm

Trust me if it came down to *this* job v. ND football you'd see me in the bread lines wearing THE SHIRT.

MJL: Do you take advantage of those expectant mother parking spaces?

MJL -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 04:09 pm

No. She usually insists on walking at those moments. I can't explain it. Due on June 20th, for those of you wishing to track a lottery.

Also, I'll be partying with the brother-in-laws this weekend, which I know will make a few of you jealous. Flogging Molly in Columbus on Sunday. I don't know where in Columbus, but if we get appropriately close to tOsu I'll hawk the appropriate loogey.

Bullfrog -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 04:25 pm

Reggie Ho didn't share my opinion, but I thought Flogging Molly was awesome in concert. You're going to enjoy yourself.

Grafe -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 04:32 pm

I am so jealous.

MJL -- Wednesday, May 24 2006, 05:29 pm

Mark this day. I boasted about my social calendar. It should happen again sometime in 2011.
