Now, children.

Posted: 7:41 am, Friday, March 31st

75 years ago today, Knute Rockne died in a plane crash in crazyville. Here's to you, Kanoot, my collitch probably would've folded in the 40s if not for the groundwork you laid in the 20s. The Nation's been running tributes for the past few days (not *that* the Nation).

Never knew about the site Ad Freak before yesterday, but it seems like they get all riled up about goofy-ass ads, kind of like I do. They have a more global focus, though. They also pointed me to this bizarre site, at which I could watch that cow fly away all day long.

Speaking of cows, this kind of relates to the Sports Guy thing I mentioned yesterday and the SI article on sports blogs and their legitimacy. The girl being discussed in that blog entry first came into the "national eye" during an FSU broadcast in which Musberger more or less leered at her over the mike, got passed around Facebook (I dunno, I guess it's like MySpace or something), and somehow landed a column at CNNSI out of the whole thing. This chick is the bad part of the interweb (or America, as the above author posits, and, from some of the responses down below, I'd say he's hit a nerve), just like that nincompoop from USC who ESPN handed a column to during football season was. I'm yet again trying to piece some coherent paragraphs together about the recent article in SI about blogs, and completely failing. I'm also having a hard time making it be interesting in the slightest. So I'm going to sum up my feelings on that article in a few brief bullet points:

  • Sports Guy, for more or less being the original sports blogger, has his head up his ass as far as sports blogs and the interweb are concerned.
  • Blogs, for the most part, analyze the news instead of report it. If ESPN and CNNSI didn't have a monopoly on the mainstream sports scene, this wouldn't be necessary. This is an excellent feature of blogs, and if our news - on every level - wasn't dependent on advertisers, would be adopted by mainstream media across the board.
  • Credit where credit is due, though, CNNSI's On Campus is actually quite blog-friendly. They link to folks a lot, spreading the wealth and saying through a proxy what they're not really allowed to.
  • The internet is open to everyone - hell, someone as dopey as me can harvest something of a readership - and this drives the mainstream media nuts. I hope against hope that this does not result in the internet eventually not being open to everyone. History more or less shows that agencies bigger than the invidivual always strive to silence the individual, to varying degrees. As the internet requires resources a great deal of people are incapable of providing on their own, I fear for its sustainable freedom (hello, China).
  • Don't give a column to someone whose soul claim to fame is a good plastic surgeon when there's actual *good* sports writers out there. God. That one just drives me nuts.

Anyway, that's all I've really got. Sorry for this completely incoherent rant.

Leavin' you with two parting shots - the most random Retrocrush babe gallery ever (totally SFW, even in the most draconian company, really), and a nice little poem I found for no real reason.

Diesel Sweeties just unveiled the coolest t-shirt in their history, which is saying a lot for the dude who made the I Am Ten Ninjas tee.

When I was a kid, I actively sought out the Power Droid figure. It's still about my favorite Star Wars figure. It's a box with legs that serves no discernible purpose and was on screen for maybe thirty seconds in the entire trilogy. How friggin' awesome is that?

This guy has the best SI-author photo ever.

Why were you reading a NASCAR article, Bullfog? are you a closet fan?

dave -- Friday, March 31 2006, 10:56 am

tim tuttle looks like a cross between wilford brimley and a child molester. when will dudes realize that moustaches are NOT cool? agreed with the sports guy. bill simmons is one of the most annoying/thinks he's so funny – but rarely is/thinks he knows-it-all out there. good for him with the 'ultimate' job, but he was a lot better when he was 'cult' in boston in the late '90's.

Bullfrog -- Friday, March 31 2006, 11:16 am

Wasn't - his photo was on the front page of CNNSI and I wanted to share it with the group. I think auto racing in any form is pretty stupid. I can see where it would be fun in theory, but why in God's name would you want to sit there and watch cars go around in a circle for three hours?

So, now that her husband has cheated on her, which team does Anna Benson sleep with, the Mets or the O's? The Mets had to put up with her longer, but the O's are, well, the O's and could use the confidence boost.

See, I'm betting if the original threat was divorce and not mass-cuckolding, Kris Benson would've cheated on her a lot earlier. What a freaking psychopath that one is. Benson should consider himself lucky that she doesn't shoot him, all things considered. (link from Deadspin because, predicatably, annabenson.net is not currently available)
