An epic installment of Five Bucks, on a Friday.

Posted: 7:25 am, Friday, March 17th

Hope everyone's wearing the green today. We've got a Five and Dime down below to commemorate the day. Today would be a whole lot cooler if I weren't at the office, let me tell you. Of course, so would just about every day. But St. Patrick's Day, the opening round of the NCAAs, and a Friday? At least I'm over my karmically deserved illness. I should count my blessings.

Fast Company's got a few jobs for us that won't exist in 10 years. One of them is 'blogging'. This is a job? I mean, I know some folks make money off their blogs, but I'm pretty sure they're in the vast minority. Gawker and Deadspin and stuff - I don't really consider those blogs. Hell, I get more sports info off Deadspin now than I do ESPN's site.

Drink at Work is having a .. well, I don't know what the hell it is. A variety show, I guess. Next Monday (i.e., ten days from now). 2.0 and I went to their benefit back in ... August or sometime, and it was really something. I don't know many of the comics or bands listed here, but I'm sure it will be a good time.

Not much of an article from the Times on a burlesque school, but we were hanging with 2.0's friend that's a burlesque dancer the other night and I thought I'd mention it.

Seriously, A Lesson is Learned but the Damage is Irreversible makes no sense.

I love how fiscally conversative our conservative government is. Wait, never mind. (By the way, fantastic cover piece on Harper's this month, excerpted here, framing the case for impeachment of the worst president in history. Also, there's a good chance Bob Schieffer will be shot in the chest and face this Sunday morning.)

Alright, I think we're good for right now. Enjoy St. Pat's Day, have a carbomb for me, and I'll catch you on Monday.

Gooooooo, Irish!

Happy St. Patrick's Day, all! Bullfrog, I love the strip today!

2.0 -- Friday, March 17 2006, 08:46 am

Is it just me, or is the doctor situated in a Moonlighting-esque fog?

Bullfrog -- Friday, March 17 2006, 09:06 am

Never saw Moonlighting, so, uh, I don't know.

Thanks, Secretary!

skt -- Friday, March 17 2006, 09:12 am

what kind of observation does ron/pete need for a broken arm? does he have THE POX?

2.0 -- Friday, March 17 2006, 09:36 am

I was thinking that too. He did get hit by a car, but no mention of getting concussed was made.

What I was asking, "bullfrog," was did you use lighten him up some for some reason, he just looks a bit lighter than the rest of the gang.

2.0 -- Friday, March 17 2006, 09:39 am

On Moonlighting Cybill Shepherd would alway appear in this soft focus haze, while everything around her would be in sharp focus. It was just this weird thing that the show was known for. That and breaking the fourth wall.

God! You haven't seen Moonlighting? Who are you?

Bullfrog -- Friday, March 17 2006, 09:45 am

I dunno, when my friend got hit by a cab, she had to stay in the hospital overnight. I s'pose Pete has a concussion.

And the doc just has paler skin from being inside with flourescent lighting all day.

2.0 -- Friday, March 17 2006, 09:48 am

But even his eyes are pale, and the shadows on his mouth and under his chin are less strong than those on the rest. I'm saying it looks like you used some sort of filter...did you?

DID YOU!

(I realized it sounds like I am accusing you of something, I'm really just wondering)

Bullfrog -- Friday, March 17 2006, 10:16 am

Uh, no, I didn't. Filters in Illustrator work a little differently than that. I'll run a demonstration on Monday.

bullfrog: any drinkin' planned for paddy's day?

Zero -- Friday, March 17 2006, 12:08 pm

Cybill Shepherd's 'haze' was from being shot through gauze, which she apparently insisted on to hide wrinkles. They do the same thing with Barbara Walters.

Hey, I'm with ya on A Lesson is Learned. It's like they make a series of drawings and then go, "Crap! Now we have to add words!"

Good to see that no matter how much talent is present, A-Rod's poison touch will continue to deny him championships of any kind.

Zero

Bullfrog -- Friday, March 17 2006, 12:30 pm

If only it was A-Rod that had hit into the game-ending DP.

Don't get me wrong, I love a Lesson is Learned - I think it's beautiful to look at, and I love that it makes no sense. Just, y'know, it makes *no* sense.

We're hanging with some of 2.0's friends tonight in the Smith Street vicinity. We will look for a bar that is not obnoxiously crowded. We will fail, and I will suggest we just get 40s of Mickey's and go home. The assemblage will laugh hysterically at this. I will not be joking.

dave -- Friday, March 17 2006, 03:09 pm

this will be our 1st paddy's day in brooklyn. last year, we had difficulty trying to find something in the upper west side that wasn't jammed. i saw that farrell's looks like the place to be in the 'terrace'. at about 10:30a, there was some dude setting up shop with weird hats. we may head over to brooklyn brewery, since sammy is allowed. either that or w-burgh or g-point, more dog-friendly, you know?

Bullfrog -- Friday, March 17 2006, 03:17 pm

Oral Roberts ought to be tipping off any second now.

Bullfrog -- Friday, March 17 2006, 03:44 pm

Nothing's as dog- or kid-friendly as the Brewery. Maybe the Gate on Fifth when it gets nice out, and the GYC in Carroll Gardens, but that's because of the outdoor spaces.

We hit Rhythm and Booze last year, which was the most packed its ever been. Farrell's is hilarious on St. Pat's - the cops had most of the side walk taped off with yellow police tape so the overflow could gather on the sidewalk, or so the smokers could keep drinking (although I can't imagine a situation in which the cops come down hard on Farrell's - I'm amazed smoking isn't still allowed there). Good luck finding a place - and may I recommend the corned beef sammich at Terrace Bagels. This is the one day a year I allow myself to eat corned beef, and it's a damn good thing the diocese granted a dispensation. Not that I've actually heard officially, but Albany did, so I'll revert to my Upstate citizenship for the day if need be.
