I ain't never spoke to God and I ain't never been to heaven.

Posted: 12:05 am, Thursday, February 23rd

2.0 and I went out to dinner with my parents and all of my aunts and uncles on my Mom's side last night. They were in town to see Spamalot, which they considerately did not invite us to. Thanks, gang! Anyway, fair warning; this post is being composed after many glasses of wine and a few glasses of sambuca. Also, not a lot today, in part because of the warning you all just got, but mainly because I've been pretty busy at l'office and also there didn't seem to be much goin' on today.

This still concerns me. But at least there's a rea.. son... Um...

The AV Club had a kind of non-meme sort of meme today. Hit the randomizer on your iPod and explain the first few tracks to pop up. I tried this sort of thing before, and it didn't work then and probably won't now, but whatever. The funniest part of their non-meme is David Cross congratulating himself on his music collection. Several times. OK, so, anyway, the first five songs on my iTunes party shuffle:

  1. "Say Ten," Reel Big Fish. It's about dating a vegetarian, with a nice chorus about eating vegetarians. I doubt this relationship worked out.
  2. "My Adidas," Run DMC. For some reason, at the time it happened, the idea of Jam Master Jay being rubbed out was completely absurd to me. Who could have beef with the dude that helped write My Adidas and Christmas in Hollis? I mean, honestly. Anyway, this was off a dual-CD set that 2.0 made for me about the history of hip-hop, for our first Christmas together. I already knew Run DMC's influence on hip-hop, but it's still an awesome song.
  3. "To Forgive," the Smashing Pumpkins. One of my least favorite songs off Mellon Collie, honestly. They seemed to love playing it concert, though, probably as a good change of pace. This one boot I have of theirs, Mellow, Jolly and the Infinite Madness, actually has both an electric and an acoustic cut of it.
  4. "Epic," Faith No More. You know what CD I got this from? The X-Games soundtrack volume one. I'm not kidding. That's why I have this song. It's actually a pretty good comp CD, but, God, the X-Game soundtrack? I remember when the X-Games was new and the dude on EQX was talking like it was such a mind-blowing thing. Actually, it was the summer of '96 - I may've still been listening to Z-Rock or the 103.5 back then. Anyway, I remember the DJ talking about the BMX dudes like it was nothing he'd ever seen before. Oh, man, the mid-90s. What is it?
  5. "?" OutKast. Oh, man, I couldn't've planned that better. Same David Cross. My taste in music is unparalleled. Except for that whole X-Games CD. Screw you all.

Anything with a picture of a backswood-looking dude on the byline is probably to be taken with a grain of salt, but he raises a good point about the blood-thinning meds Cheney’s on.

The Onion touches on the classic rock t-shirt issue. Also, in case it’s a different ad when you visit, the most unnecessary DVD collection ever is being advertised on the Onion.

Man, I just don’t get Achewood.  It’s supposedly awesome.  It inspires long posts from Websnark (then again, so does everything).  It’s got a long Wikipedia entry (longer than Mongolia's, anyway).  People love it.  It’s been around since 2001.  I have no clue what the hell is going on here.  Haven’t from the get.

By the way, screw you, Steinbrenner.

1. "Natural Woman", Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies. Perhaps I am the only woman who thinks this, but "Natural Woman" creeps me out. What does it mean exactly? At any rate, Me First takes a bad song, and make it better...this is just one example.

2. "Car Thief", The Beastie Boys. Paul's Boutique is easily one of my top five favorite albums. I still to this day hear samples I never noticed before. It's their best album hands down.

"Baghdad," The Offspring. I've never heard this song before. It's on Rock Against Bush, an album Jeremiah bought back before the asshole hijacked the election. On the same album is this great Ministry song called "No W." The Ministry song is why I keep this album around.

"Baby Got Back," Richard Cheese. Hmmm, another cover. J and I have RAW to thank for this find. Richard Cheese is a lounge act that covers mostly popular music...regardless of genre. As an example, there's a cover of "More Human than Human", "Hot for Teacher", and a brillant "Insane in the Brain." Also, for those who loved Dawn of the Dead, he's the guy who covered "Down with the Sickness."

"Here's to the State of Mississippi" Phil Ochs. This album is one I mean to listen to, but it always loses to Wilco, whom I love.

"Lua," Bright Eyes. I admit it, I kinda hate hipsters, and so at first I resisted listening to Bright Eyes. I'm glad I got over my prejudice. This album is beautiful. Lua's probably the most depressing song on the album...as a result I often skip it. It's too truthful in its rendering of addiction for my morning commute unfortunatly.

She's not kidding - Lua makes me want to drink paint and die. I only listen to it when we've got the stereo going and I'm too wrapped up in drawing to walk across the room and change the track.

bullfrog: thanks for the 'bulldog' on pete's shirt. i'll consider that a tribute to this guy: http://sammythebulldog.blogspot.com/

i wouldn't go printin' up those yankees world series or even playoff yet. have they seen the lines ups for the red sox, toronto, white sox, angels, a's, mariners? the AL will be tough in the NL: the mets, the cardinals, the braves, maybe houston and the dodgers can do some good stuff.

dave -- Thursday, February 23 2006, 10:40 am

my randomized top 5:

1. slow dawn - smashing pumpkins: judas o - b-sides and rarities. man, i remember when i found the machina ii thing, while googling the web back while i lived in boston in 2002. i downloaded the who deal at work and got yelled at from the it dude.

2. circles - joe satriani: time machine (disc 2). satriani is only appreciated by guitarists (well, at least in my world). it's too bad. i think the non-musician and people who dig good songs would like a lot of what joe does. some of these live tunes on time machine are from a great gig in san diego, where satriani was joined by stu hamm: bass and jonathan mover: drums. in my opinion, that still was the best incarnation of the joe satriani live group.

3. last night - the strokes: this is it. when the strokes cam out, what like 2003? i didn't know what the big deal was. sometimes i'm late on the bandwagon for some stuff. the same was the case with franz ferdinand. i still haven't gotten into the white stripes. anyway, the strokes are great. this is a fun tune my wife likes to dance around to.

4. transition - pat metheny: a map of the world. my wife mention, around the time i got this metheny recording, that 'a map of the world' was supposed to be a good book. i never read it, nor saw the movie. but the soundtrack, done by guitarist pat metheny, is good. one of those chill-out type things. it's difficult, however to hear some of those tracks, out of sequence. one of the drawbacks to the ipod random feature.

5. cinnamon gil - radiohead: live in santa barbara. this radiohead cover of neil young's classic was sent to me by my pal larry. he was going thru a huge illegal download phase (on in which he used 3 computers at once!) this i believe was from the period between the bend and ok computer. good stuff.

5.

sorry about the misspellings and misHTMLing.

I don't get Achewood either, and I read way too many webcomics. I could list a dozen super popular ones that, frankly, suck.

Screw Steinbrenner? Screw Johnny 'But now I'm here playing for the greatest franchise in the world' Damon. I hope Coco Crisp whips him in every offensive category.

I'm having a hard time getting much ire worked up for John Damon. It'll be nice to watch his annual August-September slump from the other dugout. Glad to know I'm not the only one that Achewood mystifies, though.

Yeah, dave, Machina II was the best thing they did post-Mellon Collie, methinks. Speed Kills is awesome.

Without further ado: Virtual Curling.

Licia -- Thursday, February 23 2006, 04:47 pm

This is a fun game! Lets see...

1. Thin line between love and hate, Annie Lenox. While I like Annie Lenox, I don't think she deserved an Oscar for her Lord of the Rings song. 2. I shall believe, Sheryl Crow. Great ballad from her first album. The Lance thing kinda weirded me out. And now she is so so skinny! Did you see her at the grammys? Her dress was crazy low cut and her boobs look like that crazy over-tanned drunk woman who lives next to Cameron Dias in Something about Mary. 3. How many of us have them(friends), Alana Davis. Alana Davis is one of my favorite relatively unknown artists. She had one hit "32 flavors" back in the late 90s. Awesome voice. Highly recommend. 4. No need to argue, Cranberries. I love the Cranberries! also have piano music for this album. in highschool, i played keyboards in an all girl band called the Flowering Toes, and we played Zombie in an audition for the key club talent show. we didn't make the cut... 5. Call me, Blondie. Went on a Blondie kick when I studied abroad in London. i've since recovered.

Bullfrog -- Thursday, February 23 2006, 05:00 pm

Yeah, Sheryl Crow looked horrible at that awards thing. Also, I think Lance Armstrong is a dick. Pretty sure he left his family to bike.
