Comic for Thursday, January 5th, 2006

Oh, shush, it was going to happen eventually.

That's right. It's 2006 and I'm making an iPod silhouette joke. Blah-dowwww. Actually, this is mostly born out of 2.0's unending concern for the Nano from the strip right before Christmas. She had decided that it either landed on a jacket that was laying on the ground, or that the dude in the grungy old Giants sweatshirt was actually a former receiver for the Giants, and he dove and caught the thing before it hit the ground. 2.0 seriously was worried about Jen's Nano.

Speaking of 2.0, she bought her first-ever video game yesterday - the Sims 2. As we speak, her character has married her female roommate, gotten a job on a political campaign, and learned five recipes. This is pretty good, considering I have yet to figure out what the hell she's actually doing beside running around the house talking to her roommates and cleaning up one of their messes. I am digging the non-language that the characters speak in, and was haivng some fun playing with the design-a-character, but I apparently had to unlock anything that resembled my haircut. So that kind of sucked. I think I'm going to try and design the four Five Buckers or something sometime just for fun.

Her roommate's in the shower right now. 2.0's eating raw beef. This game is bizarre.

Only the Blog Knows Brooklyn gave its annual awards the other day, and there was basically one for every conceivable category except best comic blog run out of Windsor Terrace. Which, hopefully, I would've won. But maybe not, who knows? I'm pretty sure this is because Only the Blog Knows Brooklyn has no idea this site exists. I'm being passive aggressive and hoping they view their trackbacks or something today instead of e-mailing and being all, 'what the hell, man?' Of course, if they are, and then they see this - well, never let it be said I think things through all that well.

2.0 seems to actually be her roommate now. I don't understand this game in the slightest. Her bills are due! What the hell fun is that?

Sorry, I'm having a hard time concentrating on this while this game is going on. Maybe I otter go finish this up in the other room - I don't have much left, anyway. Busy day at the office, don't you know. Actually, funny story, I got in a bit of trouble re: my dedication by this dude for whom I went into the office on a Saturday. Evidently, I should've stayed 'til eleven on a Friday, instead. There's no figuring out consultants.

Since I keep talking about video games anyway, check out this kinda crazy article from last March or sometime off of 1up, about religion in video games. It's not actually anything groundbreaking, but I always find it funny that early Nintendo games had crosses censored out of them for fear of offending anyone's religious sensibilities.

Um, let's see... Sorry, gang, I honestly have, like, nothing today. I guess I could rag on my own drawing a bit more - still getting back in the swing of things, as you can see from Lissa's face in the first panel. But, hell, I've gotten all the strips in on time this week, which is better than I did last year this time.. Um, yeah. Wow. I'll have more to say tomorrow, I promise.

I was in court in VA today and noticed a sign that read "Friday, January 13th, the court will be closed for Lee-Jackson Day. The court will also be closed the 16th for MLK day." Hmmm... only in Virginia can we celebrate two Confederate Generals on the same weekend as Martin Luther King, Jr. So, I Googled this only to find a website that explained it like this: "Virginia's wacky history with Lee-Jackson-King day is less about racism (as might be implied by combining it with the longer standing holiday for the Confederates) than it is about defending causes. Most people assume, for instance, that Virginia was all Arizona-like about the MLK holiday and crammed the other celebration in with it to be less cooperative and more statesrightsey. But the Confederate thing started shortly after the Civil War, and Virginia waffled about how to celebrate King for years before the federal holiday was implemented. First, it was New Year's Day, then it was moved later in the month. The coincidence of Lee-Jackson Day and MLK Day didn't strike the state legislature as particularly ironic in the late 70s/early 80s when it was first implemented."

Is anyone else convinced?

Well, state legislatures generally aren't the most aware organizations..

The "Holiday for the Confederates" is kind of troubling. We should get a "Holiday for the Union That Kicked Your Asses" also. Or at least force a Sherman Day on them.

Enough with Football already. It's Big East Basketball season! And the Domers lost a 2OT heartbreaker to Pitt last night. http://www.southbendtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/ article?AID=/20060105/NDSports03/601050461/-1/SPORTS/CAT=NDS ports03

How about a little Hollywood? For those w/o Comedy Cental, you will be able to see Jon Stewart host the Oscars: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/a rticle/2006/01/05/AR2006010500800.html

"Those without Comedy Central." Basically, E is saying "for Bullfrog and 2.0."

MJL -- Thursday, January 5 2006, 01:06 pm

and saying "those not already watching Elmo"

E -- Thursday, January 5 2006, 01:29 pm

I knew you'd know who I was talking to ;-)

Bullfrog -- Thursday, January 5 2006, 02:02 pm

Man, don't get me started on Elmo. The Elmo's World segment of Sesame Street drives me nuts. A segment I discovered, I may add, while calling the Basilica offices about 300 times one morning trying to get you a wedding date, MJ.

To the surprise of no one, Manny just decided he didn't want to be traded.
